Police in Hakodate, Hokkaido, have arrested a 39-year-old man on a charge of abandoning a woman's body in an apartment.

According to police, the suspect, Yusuke Sato, turned himself into police on the night of Aug 15 and confessed to having left the body of a woman whom he had beaten to death, Fuji TV reported Monday.

When police went to investigate Sato's story, they found the woman's body on a futon in the apartment. Police said decomposition had set in, and that the woman had been dead for at least 10 days.

Police said that the woman and Sato had been living together and that Sato confessed that he had assaulted her after a verbal altercation had erupted.

At least he turned himself in. Remember, the charge of "abandoning a body" is just an initial one. He'll be charged with murder after the investigation.

And since it was a lover's quarrel he may only get a 5 to 7 year sentence, if that.

Quiet so!

What an unhappy incident! He apparently ended up gambling his life on being unable to restrain his anger. It's literally like "It is too late for the bird to scream when it is caught."

May she rest in peace.

With this 'shared' economy that we have now, more of this stuff will happen...stress

Who said he was quiet?

What does the shared economy have to do with anything?

I don't know of any other country that has this 'abandoning a body' offence. He admitted to beating her to death! Shouldn't the charge be, 'murder one'?

Why should this two-step process be even necessary? People should either be arrested as "murder-suspects" (in instances like this) or not at all. "Abandoning a body"...........I have never heard of anywhere else in the world that has such an absurd law

It gives the Police a reason to detain a suspect without a formal murder suspect arrest.

This gives the police more time to work on their investigation - they charge them with abandoning a body, which allows them to keep the suspect for 22 days (48hrs + 10days + 10days), then as the suspect is about to be released on that charge, they charge them with murder, giving them another 22 days. This gives them a month and a half to investigate unhindered by the defendant.

To be honest, I don't like it, as it allows for a police state to some degree, but as far as strategy goes on the part of the police, it's quite smart, and makes a lot of sense.

They don't call it murder one here, but he will be charged with murder eventually. Why does it have to be right away? The end result will be the same.
