Man arrested for hit-and-run in Saitama

SAITAMA —

Police on Thursday arrested a 66-year-old man over the hit-and-run death of a 30-year-old man in Saitama earlier Thursday morning. Hiroshi Nakata, 66, was arrested for allegedly hitting Soichiro Utsunomiya, 30, and driving off around 2:30 a.m. The victim was taken to hospital but died about one hour later.

According to police, Nakata, who is a newspaper delivery man, was driving his van while on duty, when he ran over the victim. The victim was apparently drunk and had passed out on the street. Nakata was quoted by police as saying, “I hit something but I didn’t know it was a body.” A witness told police she had seen the driver get out of the van after the accident and then get back in and drive off.

I didn't know it was a body until I checked and then made the decision to bolt like lightning. Who'da thunk there was a witness?
