The taiho in taiho-jutsu is 逮捕, meaning arrest, capture, apprehend.

The UK and US have their own associations for it -

    Eh?

I saw all the police there today. So many cars, so many police! Knew something must have happened, but had no idea what it was. I read the news about the last Akihabara attack a feeks ago in my country. Just arrived in Japan, and went to Akihabara today. I told a few people "I'm off to Akihabara" and they said 'be careful' (Japanese people). I thought nothing'll happen, last time was just one freak thing, maybe not. Its a shame, cause its a great place. Attracts lots of tourists, as well as Japanese. Akihabara would suffer if people stop going there because they feel its actually quite risky

wait, but why would he need to carry a knife in the first place?. was he off to cooking class? or does he like to peel his apples before he eats them?

i don't see why anyone needs to even carry a knife. unless your work requires it.

it's so funny how people copy cat everything that they see on the news. someone should do a story about a random japanese guy hugging a complete stranger out of the blue. maybe we will have a rampage of random hugs among strangers on our hands.

    He was probably unemployed.

I'm with those who think it was police neligence in getting cut on the hand. The story does not read like this guy was brndishing a knife. Anyway the legal length of knives is a joke as any kitchen knife would inflict far greater damage than a pocket knife that's 1.5cm too long.

  • NipponGaijinKun at 05:26 AM JST - 27th June

Doesn't matter what size the knife is, why does this guy has it? IN THE MIDLLE OF THE CITY??? Whenever I went in Japan - there is no wilderness, no branches to cut off, nothing to do w/ the knife, except knifing things like people or vandalizm! So this guy shouldn't hv been carying it in a 1st place anyway! Understandably - "Hi officer, yes I have a knife, just bought it, here is the receipt.... for my kitchen/house" - that would go fine, but still alert cops to some extent! But just caryying one - what is your reason for it sir? ....- SILENCE"??? Send him up the chain!!!

    Zen Builder,

Thanks for that - I thought that the limit was 15cm, but now see that it is 6. The 15cm limit is for "swords", which I suppose means non-folding.

Seems that the police took a criminal from our streets.

    Funkyfresh,

I always cary a knife - have for the past 50 years or so. I use it to trim toenails, fingernails, ear hair, nose hair, remove splinters, etc. More uses when in the field or working on a project, but it cannot be used if it is not available, and to be available it needs to be carried. The blade must be all of 3cm.

  • Zen_Builder at 05:56 AM JST - 27th June

    TJrandom.

Here is how it actually works. Blades fall into different categories.

Blades under 6cm can be carried for any purpose.

Blades between 6 and 15cm, you need to give a valid reason(work, etc) for carrying them: Example carrying a camping knife on a camping ground is ok, carrying the same knife in Shibuya is NOT.

Blades over 15cm need to be licenced for possesion/collecting, in case of MA weapons it can be carried between residence and training in an appropriate case/holder with the licence attached. The licence also gives the cop permission to come and check storage at home when they want to do so. Usually only happens after aquisition and when a crime with a similar weapons was comited.

You can't legally bring/take those weapon from Japan either(Hong Kong, etc to). Hence why the shop in Akiba had a "No foreigner" sign but meant to say "No Tourists" Of course Business knifes like kitchen knifes don't fall into that category.

Above was for sharp/live blades. Knifes and swords(like openly sold in Akasaka, etc) that are for display only(not sharpened) can be bought freely and don't fall under the above rules.

    HTH.

so who gave the cops to do an illegal search on this guy in the first place?

Carrying a knife does not make him criminal. Maybe he was going to a bbq or something. Get real you friggin hypocrittes!

Knives are very, very dangerous! There are way too many wacky Japanese here, oops this is Japan. Anyway, all you need is another idiot to try to go out in a blazing hail of fire, with out the guns, hence you have idiots who do not have the courage to commit suicide to try and kick others and then be put out of their own misery by the J-Cops??
