realist, try reading the news. It's not always Japanese men, mothers do commit violent acts of rage on their children too! Lest you forget the recent ones where the mother parked her car and jumped in front of a train, or the couple of girls who burnt a child's hand to see if it was funny. Less of the stereotyping please. Crime figures in Japan are parallel with most EU states, and far lower than the US.

hope the kids ok. Any news as to whether the kid is fine or not?

Now this is deserving of the death penalty

Hakujin...you are certainly right, it is easy for us to talk about what we would do but that what we really would do faced with a situation may be far different.

But...if the child were a couple of days younger, she would not have been in the mother's womb. She was already one month old according to the article, not one or two days old. And babies are not, to my knowledge at least, aborted when the mother is just about to give birth. Interesting that you decided to take issue with right to choose when you yourself most likely never will have to face that type of situation. (How do I know? All through your post you referred to the baby girl as a male. Most women would have been more conscious of which sex the baby was.)

I freely admit that I like to think if were I faced with a situation where I was aware that someone was abusing their child like this sicko did to his daughter, that I would take action. I don't know if I would be too unsure about whether I was correct or not, or if I would just jump in and do something. I haven't been there yet.

    What would you do?

One thing is for sure, Hakujin...you are definitely right when you say this guy needs a LOT of counselling. I just hope he gets it. Perhaps it is wrong for me to feel this way, but I also hope his counselling takes place behind bars for many, many years without the chance to hurt his daughter again.

Hope the little one recovers without long-term damage.

If you need a license to fish, you should definitely require a license to be a parent.

Libertas, that would be nice but unfortunately there's no way to test a person's capability as a parent. We see this a lot in the U.S. as well, though it usually manifests as "shaken-baby syndrome" instead of getting stomped. People unable to deal with the stress of a crying baby will violently shake it trying to get it to stop. Sadly, they usually succeed too well.

    hakujinsensei:

" The child was only 1 month old, had he been just a month n a couple of days younger, he could have had his head crushed and have been cut in to small pieces in order to be removed from his mothers womb yet millions clamor for the right to choose... It is a slippery slope we have chosen to navigate and we are loosing to the slope. "

That´s an excellent point, but I am afraid we can´t pursue that here because the moderators will say it is off topic. Indeed, between partial birth abortion and this baby who was a nuisance for her father, there are only 4 short weeks...

As a father my heart aches for this child. With so many couples praying, wishing, and hoping for a child this makes me sick. As a human being it makes me wonder as I see swallows make thousands of trips each day to feed their offspring that will be lucky if one survives because of privation and predation. Who are the animals? As a scientist it gives pause as to how any mammal that gave half their genes to their progeny could do such a thing. That in genetics is a huge investment. Then again the contribution of the male mammal is far less than the female. As a rational being I just cannot understand how things like this happen. It is completely irtational. My heart to the child.

Too bad you had such a sorry excuse for a dad. As Dr. Richard Dawkins noted, "Any male can be dad, but it takes something special to be a nurturing father."

It seems like one of the major reasons these parents intentionally or inadvertently hurt their children is because of their inability to deal with the child crying. There should be a hotline for parents to call for immediate assistance when faced with this situation.

I can't handle news like this anymore. It seems like every day I read about some parent abusing/killing their kid because he/she wouldn't stop crying. I have noticed people (here) often just let their children cry and cry without addressing the situation at hand, much less comfort the child.

Ignoring and neglect is also a form of abuse. I realize that is not what happened here but something tells me the father reached his limit while trying to ignore the crying.

I don't know what else I can say except that I feel disgusted and my heart breaks every time I read this type of news.

True, but at least we in the States punish these monsters accordingly. Here, 5 - 6 years for murdering one's old child is, pardon the pun on my name, par for the course.

    It's sickening.

hakujinsei's comments are scary! If I ever caught anybody abusing a child in my own neighborhood, yes, 110! (the japanese version of the US 911) I am sure my good police force here in Tokyo would take such a scum bag away for good long time, and help put that innocent child in protective custody. This is not a cultural thing, stomping on babys?? This is just plain savage action taking by some idiot drunk "father" I do hoe someone in jail stomps on his head to help some common sense sink in!

    "the baby wouldn't stop crying"

If I had a "father" like that, I wouldn't stop crying either.

  • Disillusioned at 05:35 PM JST - 24th May

The baby wouldn't stop crying so he stomped on it. What an exceptional human being! I suppose the thought never occurred to him to feed the baby or change its nappy or even play with it. The adjectives needed to describe this dirtbag are not permitted in public forum. Sadly and alarmingly, I hear these kinds of stories every week in Japan.

Something WRONG here …. The Assault happened in January and we are in MAY now and the guy has ONLY just been arrested!

No wonder the police have not found the driver of a hit and run with me that happened over 2 years ago now … The police in Japan are useless!
