This man is Barbarian and should hang, no mercy should take into account in court. He is old enough to have some respect for his family and grandchildren. Kick him out from this world.
This entire situation is sick, sad, tragic. She "refused" to let him get in bed with her? Why did he want to "get in bed with her" in the first place? Of course he doesn't remember. Why would he? How convenient that he had been "drinking shochu" -- that oughta wipe out most of his "memory."
The other disturbing, bizarre thing about this and any other article having to do with someone being injured in Japan is the reporter always quotes exactly how long it's going to take for the victim to "heal"; in this case "two weeks" -- yeah, right. I'd say, as I have countless times before, it's going to take her the rest of her life on a therapist's sofa to "heal." That man needs to be arrested and that girl needs to be placed with a loving family--fat chance of that ever happening -- to anyone in this country.
Back to the "sick society" statements going on here. This is a social sickness. For eons in Japan, older men have sought to regain their vitality by having sex with girls. Back in the bubble days, the business men would travel far and wide to have sex with underage girls, paying even more if they were virgins. Now, these old, retired, unimportant ojisans try to regain their former vigor while in a pill-induced drunken haze. I think that this idea has led to many, many girls being raped by grandfathers in Japan. You won't find this proven by statistics, but I think the problem goes a lot deeper than most people would hope, or imagine.
I do agree with MeanRingo. I heard many real life stories among J people around me, but regretfully they didn't have the courage to report the matter to the Police. Or even if they do, the Police don't interfere citing the problem is a domestic one.
‘‘I can’t remember. If I did it, I’m sorry,’’ he was quoted as saying to police.
Sick old bastard! I'd like to arrange it so he never forgets it! It seems every time I open a newspaper someone in Japan has killed one of the offspring and it's nearly always by stabbing them. There has been half a dozen in the last month! When my friends back home ask me about life in Japan their images of Mt. Fuji, Kimonos, Bullets Trains and sushi are very quickly shattered by reflecting on a few recent news stories (mine too!).

Indeed, the image of Japan is changing. There was always an image of a kind and honest society where pride is the most important thing for any Japanese. I am not so sure about that anymore but i do hope that the future of this country will be better than we all think.
Good old fashioned wickedness. At least the girl was smart enough to tell her "granpa" "what the hell are you doing!??!". Disgusting mentality going on these days. Its not the culture thats bad, its the society that doesn't remember the difference between right and wrong.
Incest is not not a "sick Japanese twisted society problem" it is a fundamental problem throughout the ENTIRE WORLD. It makes me very sad though, this poor little girl, having her perverted old drunk granfather trying to hop into bed with her, then this old goat goes and stabs her??? This old goat needs to be either locked up for life or given the death penalty!
To me, this guy tried to get in her bed. Then, when she refused, he might have thought something like "shit, she has some character of her own! She might even talk about that to someone! I need to do something!"
And now that she escaped and he is caught, he's pretending not to remember and blame alcohol ... Had he succeeded in "preventing her to talk", he would have pretended it was an accident, suicide or else maybe ...
I think he should be hanged ...
Stick him up on a pole in front of the station for three or four days with a description of what he has done round his neck. That should give him and all those like him something to think about.
1) I completely agree with Mr. Mexicano up there, this type of sexual abuse within the family is not exclusive to Japan, it's in every country unfortunately.
2) This probably happens a lot more than people imagine.
3) I am sick of the "I don't remember" (so therefore it didn't happen) excuse. It makes me so angry what people can get away with by that very statement alone.
4) I don't know what to say about the little girl. On one hand, good for her for putting a stop to her monster of a grandfather but it probably wasn't the first time he tried to get into her bed. On the other hand, like others have already said, she is scarred for life probably. I hope one day she can find peace and genuine love.
Being drunk and high on pills is no excuse! His grand-daughter no less!
remove some of his "personal equipment" and perhaps he will not be prone to such behaviour again!! I hope the girl recovers from this! This type of thing happens the world over and unfortunately I don't know that it can be stopped by any civilised means.

Give her kudos. She resisted, ran to her friends house and called the cops. Three cheers for her!

This story gives me a horrible feeling that bad things happened before to this little girl and/or her sister.
I hope they can grow up to be well-adjusted women despite this.

A baseball bat to his head will help jog his memory. Hit him hard enough, and no one will have to worry about this scumbag ever again!
