Man arrested over bomb threat to former Asahi reporter

Police have arrested a 64-year-old man from Tsubame, Niigata Prefecture, for threatening a former Asahi Shimbun reporter over stories he wrote about the comfort women issue.

According to police, on Sept 12, the suspect, identified as Tsutomu Kamimura, sent a bomb threat to Hokusei Gakuen University where the former Asahi reporter now works as a part-time lecturer.

NTV reported that Kamimura phoned the university and demanded that the former reporter be fired, otherwise he would detonate a bomb planted somewhere on campus.

Police said the bomb threat forced the university to halt all classes so they could perform a full search for any suspicious items.

Police quoted Kamimura as saying he was angry at the Asahi reporter's stories about the controversial issue of comfort women used by the Japanese army during World War II.

Kamimura has been charged with forcible obstruction of business. Police have since pulled the call history from Kamimura's personal home phone and are investigating whether he may have also been responsible for a number of threats the university received between May and July this year.

Maybe a stint in the clink will help him look at sexual slavery and rape with fresh, watering eyes.
