Man arrested over fatal hit-and-run on Oct 5
TOKYO —
Police on Tuesday arrested a 44-year-old man for the hit-and-run death of a 65-year-old man in Koganei City, suburban Tokyo, on Oct 5. Tatsuya Ikeda was arrested for allegedly hitting Tadashi Kato who was drunk and sleeping on the road, around 8:40 p.m., police said.
Ikeda fled the scene but police identified his car from images taken from street surveillance cameras. According to police investigations, Ikeda was driving with his wife and daughter when he hit the victim. He told police that he felt he had hit something but thought it might have been an animal.

Drunk + Sleeping on the road = Getting run over. Egads, it adds up. Poor drunken sod. Poor Ikeda too.

And he was correct. It takes the mentality of an animal to sleep on the road. I have been extremely drunk. I do not think it is possible to be so drunk to do this, you have to pretty stupid. Stupid like a possum.
It was on video this time, that is why. Otherwise we would only have the driver's word on it. I wonder how many times this has happened and everybody blamed the driver for being careless? Well, they will still call the driver careless. In Japan, if you car hits something, you have to stop and check. Nevermind the risk to life pulling over on a narrow road and getting out of your car. Remember the guy who got killed when he stopped to help the two ladies who had an accident? Hit by a car. Welcome to Japan where you are damned if you and damned if you don't. And it would be unseemly to blame a dead guy for his own drunken suicide. --Cirroc

Somehow I don't think being drunk enough to sleep in the middle of the road allows rational decision making. I've woken up in some pretty strange places in my day. You don't get drunk and sleep in the road, you get drunk and pass out in the road. that said, when you are driving, you are supposed to be looking where you are going, and if you hit something as big as a person, most people would at least check to see what it was. I don't know if I believe this guy thinking it was an animal and continueing on.

Still, if I felt a big bumb under my car I would stop and look. The guy sounds like a liar.

Maybe he is a liar. But do you think he would have gotten any mercy if he had stopped to see?
Sure, but of all the things out there that driver's have to dodge, an idiot sleeping or passed out on the road can be a tough one to spot. There are some pretty dark spots out there, and given angles and the size of people, it can be hard to determine if that is a person, a board, or just some rubbish on the road. I would need to see the video and the spot before coming down too hard on this guy. The authorities will just do it automatic. --Cirroc

After 24 days we are told that driver was arrested? Does it take so long to nab 'motor criminals' in Japan? Very, very slow like 'TANGO' in the evening after dinner.

If it was a drunk gaijin, it would proberly be comic relief over here, regardless, I would stop and look, hell hitting a person would be quiet a big bump now wouldnt it, and you know the mentality over here, no one cares about others anymore, no one wants to take responsability for their actions, and getting a bit like america, its always another persons fault, but as I like to say also, stupid people die.
