Man arrested over hit-and-run death in Hino
TOKYO —
A 29-year-old man was arrested Friday over the death of a 65-year-old man who was killed in a hit-and-run accident March 7 in Hino City, police said.
According to police, Keiichi Taguchi of Hachioji is suspected of hitting Eichi Aida, who was drunk and sleeping on the sidewalk at the time, and then driving away. Police are investigating additional charges of trying to conceal the crime after Taguchi himself repaired the damages his car received in the accident.
Taguchi was quoted by police as saying, “There was a big impact. At first, I didn’t even know what I had hit. When I saw him lying there, I didn’t think he had died, but I panicked and left.”

HeyLars
This story seriously needs some explanation. How did the car run over a guy sleeping on the sidewalk? Did the car go onto the sidewalk or did the man roll into the road? What caused "the big impact" and damage, hitting the man or hitting the curb and going onto the sidewalk?
And I hate the tell the police, but repairing ones car is standard proceedure when it gets damaged! Body work here is so expensive I do everything myself unless its covered by insurance!

HeyLars,
I'm not clear how he could be "sleeping on the sidewalk at the time" if he had rolled into the street. Seems to me that question was already answered in the article.
Because the guy tampered with the damage, we'll probably never get a chance to know what, exactly, caused the damage.
The police already have a confession that he saw the body, panicked, and drove away in fear. Any work he did on the car after that constitutes tampering with evidence of a known crime.

I have seen such an accident! A drunk stumbled out of a pub, the hostesses waived him goodbye, next thing, the drunk walks right into a 3 lane avenue at night in dark clothes, gets hit by a truck! We had to stop and try to pull him out of the road, so this kind of accident does happen, don't drink and drive but also don't drink and walk around into danger!

Accidents happen, shoganai. But to run away from an injured person is the ultimate kind of cowardice.
