have they never heard of demanding money without stabbing someone? No...they just sneak up and grievously harm someone to avoid creating a scene. stab first ask questions later? He could hardly have got a large some of money. This seems like there is a real disconnection from humanity in the big cities of all countries, where the pain and suffering, and life of another is disregarded altogether by perpetraitors. Maybe we should teach our kids about nasty things like crime and the consequenses for the victims,So that their sense of empathy or at the least guilt will over ride thier samurai spirit and so that they can understand what ensues from thier behaviour.Punishment is not much of a deterrant when half of these random stabbing guys admit to wanting to get caught.

22 years old and already his life is ruined. What's left of it. He may be executed.

  • roughneck at 05:54 PM JST - 16th April

    He may be executed.

He better be! I would vote for a public execution for people like these...so the other youngsters will be scared! I know....a little harsh...but it would scare a lot of people.

Sounds like another undiagnosed case of mental illness, in which case he needs treatment rather than punishment.

You hang-em-high types will be sadly disappointed once again

Mentall illness or not he must be held accountable. Whether you are in your right mind or not you must pay for murdering people. Sick of all the cases of horrific murder and even rampage murders and serial killers where they get a good lawyer and get off on "not guilty by reason of disease or mental defect" and spend a few years in a psychiatric hospital then they are free to live their life while their INNOCENT victims are dead. The vast majority of people with mental illness never do heinous crimes. You can't use mental illness as an excuse. It may confuse them or make them harder to distinguish what is going on but in many cases they still know right versus wrong and are thus morally culpable. Even with mentall illness I believe a part of you still has a choice and this man chose to murder. The majority of murder cases dont' involve mental illness anyways. Why do you automatically assume this case involves mental illness? There are some ruthless heartless evil people out there who harm others just for the "fun" of it or for profit.

".....He just stabbed whoever 'happened to be there'"

That sound so familiar. Young Japanese men stabbing people at random because they just feel like doing it?

What is this happening? Recessive war criminal genes or what?

Another example of signs this guy was headed for this kind of incident WELL before he did it, and no one doing anything until it's time to step up to the cameras after the fact and say, "I KNEW that guy was sick!". Why is it always after the fact in this country? Why couldn't the police investigate a little more after all the screams evidently heard from said maniac's apartment? Oh wait...... they couldn't get a hold of him... meaning he stopped screaming when the doorbell rang, so the police just up and walked away. Chalk up another murder to Japanese insanity, the reluctance to actually come forward, and of course... the police's inability and ineptitude to do ANYTHING until a murder has been committed.

I suggest the police stop mobbing kids over stolen bicycles, and actually start doing a bit of investigating. This guy was CLEARLY headed towards what he ended up doing, and even tough clearly heaps of people refused to report it, some did, and the police merely wanted to avoid paperwork by ringing the doorbell a few more times. Good job, J-cops! Your conviction rate will stay the same -- it's just shame you have to wait until it's so clearly obvious a crime will be committed. Anyone here heard of 'prevention'?

    well said Nessie.

  • romulus3 at 09:30 AM JST - 17th April

If they want to deter this crime they should not hang him. they should lock him in some stockade where people can throw chamber pot contents at him. that will deter the crime.

netrek - "You can't use mental illness as an excuse"

Err... you can. It is an acceptable defence in many justice systems, depending on a full psychiatric assessment. Sorry to pour cold water on your vindictive little theory, but people who genuinely cannot be held accountable for their actions due to mental illness shouldn't be. They should be treated with compassion and if necessary the public should be protected from them.
