Man charged with murder of woman in Tokyo apartment

TOKYO —

Police on Saturday indicted a 23-year-old man for murder in connection with the death of a 34-year-old woman in her apartment in Tokyo’s Itabashi on Nov 21.

Kumi Arai was stabbed to death at around 3 p.m. at her apartment near Narimasu Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. She died from at least 10 stab wounds to her chest and back. Her body was discovered by her husband. Her wallet and cell phone were stolen.

The suspect, identified as Genki Matsuo, was arrested last month and charged with theft after he withdrew 250,000 yen from the victim’s bank account using a convenience store ATM. On Saturday, a police spokesman said DNA evidence from Arai was found on Matsuo’s shoe, and the charge was changed to murder, NTV reported.

Matsuo lives only 700 meters away from the apartment where Kumi Arai was murdered. Matsuo, who has been unemployed since quitting his job at a karaoke parlor in October, has refused to talk about Arai’s murder, police said.

According to police, Matsuo closely matched the description of a man in a suit who was filmed by an apartment security camera pressing the intercom button at Arai’s apartment at 3 p.m. The same man was seen at around 4:30 p.m. at a clothing store near Ikebukuro Station where he purchased a change of clothes. Shortly before 5 p.m., he was seen going into a pachinko parlor in his suit and coming out in his new clothes.

Police said that the suspect then went to a convenience store where he withdrew the money from Arai’s bank account.

And, I bet he thought he would get away with it. Murder and robbery. That should be another one on death row

Well, I am glad they found real evidence in addition to the "he resembled the picture" that we heard before. Looks like they did get the right guy.

He may be a person of interest based on what is written but simply her DNA on his shoe doesn't prove he murdered her.

The media cannot tell the whole story..

Gents, I merely stated that based on what was written in the article does not mean he murdered her, and yes I know he has been charged but not convicted. He probably did for all we know..

It is also the job of the investigators to present a strong case beyond a reasonable doubt. Like I said the media does not have the whole story.

Plastic monkey, are you then privy to more evidence not mentioned in this article?????

@AustPaul... hehehehehe I wonder what evidence you still need. I also wonder if you are for the murderer's acquittal or against the media reporter who wrote this report... ;)

This man has only been charged, not convicted. It is the job of the investigative authorities to present the judiciary with a suspect, someone likely to have perpetrated the act. I don't see your problem with that. There's plenty of evidence for a murder charge in this case.

I feel sorry for the woman and her husband. Having lost my own wife just three months ago I know very well how he must feel now.

This lowlife had absolutely no consciousness about what a profound tragedy he created. I hope he get's a life sentence without the chance for parole. Or worse.

No-one ever has the whole story. We muddle through with as much as we can get.
