Would love to see a camera still of this guy. Hope he gets caught quickly an locked away and I hope the girl is ok. Also I seriously hope the needle-like object wasn't contaminated by anything.

Stabbing is perfect for this case. A longer deeper cut from a knife would be slashing. Stabbing is a penetrating thrust of a thin sharp blade like a dagger or stiletto.

I would like to see a report with statistics but I get the feeling that stabbing cases are getting more and more frequent, unfortunately. It makes you wonder if it is due to a copycat effect...

Some aspects of this are mildly interesting. First of all, I was dressed exactly this guy and apparently there were a large number of people moving around looking for him because the surveillance shots of him were extremely good. It made the afternoon kind of humorous for people who know me and wanted to turn me in. There were a few. People who know me best were the first to want to see me behind bars, naturally.

Reports also described the guy as middle aged. Yeah. He was 27. Which makes me a fossil, I guess.

And I guess the second bit is that the surveillance was so good. Here you have a victim who did not even know she was a victim. Nobody actually witnessed it, as far as I know, and they tracked this guy down in a city of a million or so, and it took them a matter of hours, not days.

People do these attacks because of the anonymity of crowds. Forget that. Those days are gone. Crowds are watched closely. And if you get away from the crowds, you are still tracked by highway cameras, neighbors..... of course, if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear, right?

I find it quite odd that criminals are identified by their employment status.

Talked with some 18 year old girls who use Sendai Station today. Apparently, local schools and juku/yobikou announced that young women should avoid the station if they are travelling alone. At least that is what they were announcing until they caught the guy.

So let's review. 0 Some girl gets stabbed and does not notice. 0 plus ten minutes? Someone notices the injury 0 plus twenty minutes? Crime is reported and police and security are playing back tapes and identifying the guy. 0 plus thirty minutes? Announcements are going out to area schools and businesses. 0 plus two hours? They catch the guy. He confesses and describes the weapon and where he pitched it. Case wrapped up and ready for prosecuting. Victim is being treated with public insurance. Another crazy is off the streets.

I for one am pretty amazed. Yes. Japan is a functioning civilization.

Well, if you read the article again, it says he was caught 6-7 hours later at a station 4 stops away from the scene of the crime. No details supplied, but his clothes would almost certainly have been bloodstained, and given what little we know (he's a nutter), he would surely have aroused a few suspicions among even the most dim-witted train station staff, sitting on the platform for hours on end twitching and barking and god knows what. I don't see this one as a triumph of Japanese police work.
