A man died after a suspected hit-and-run on Sunday in Nara. Police said that local resident Noriyuki Kiriyama, 35, was found bleeding on the road at about 5 a.m. on Sunday by a passerby who called for help. Kiriyama was taken to a nearby hospital but died approximately two hours later. His body had severe head and abdomen injuries, police said, adding that skid marks and tire tracks were found at the scene.
According to police, Kiriyama still had his wallet containing cash and identification, and was found about 50 meters from where his bicycle was lay. Police believe he had stopped his bicycle and was walking somewhere when he got hit.

I live in a country area that has narrow, winding roads with no sidewalks and I can't believe how fast people drive through them. So dangerous to walk.

Terrible. I agree the pro, there should be tougher laws in this country for traffic offences. Not a day goes by when I don't see people running red lights - on busy roads and at day time. Put speed cameras everywhere and cameras on every intersection, and it may just save some lives like it has in many countries.

A hit and run did me in in JUne. I got knocked out, so lost my memory of the car. The paper work is a nightmare, and I am not done with the whole mess yet.

May the driver suffer guilt and nightmares the rest of his or her life.

What, he got off his bike, laid it on the ground, walked 50 meters and then got hit?? 50 meters sounds like a lot, but I'd suggest to police that the man (or his bike) was thrown or carried by the car to that distance. Time to go to police academy again (not in Japan).

Poor man. I hope he comes out of it okay.
I hate driving on those narrow roads. I'm always afraid I'm either going to hit a person or hit the person driving on the other side of the road. Both can seemingly come out of no where, no matter how slow I'm going. Not that this justifies hitting and running. I hope whoever did this is plagued by it forever as well.

who, the driver? the victim died.

read the article, man!
I've been hit by a car while on a bicycle at least 5 times. 3 were hit and runs.

Gambling is illegal in Japan until you get on the roads and start gambling with your life. The yochien my kids go to is on a narrow connecting road that gets used as a rat-runners short cut. The idiots fly along the road at up to 100kph. During the summer vacation I stood out front of the yochien with a 30kph sign and my camera taking pictures of the speeders. I had a couple stop and threaten me until I started chasing towards them. They quickly got back in their cars and sped off again. And, the most maddening thing is, there is a koban at the end of the road - not that makes a brass razoo of difference cos there is rarely anybody in it. The reckless and careless nature of too many of the drivers in Japan is both frightening and maddening.
