Man found stabbed to death in restaurant car park in Saitama

SAITAMA —

A man was found stabbed to death early Monday morning in the car park of a restaurant in Yashio City, Saitama Prefecture. Police said Hiroshige Suzuki, 35, was found bleeding by a passerby around 1:50 a.m. in the car park of Denny’s restaurant.

He was taken to hospital but died on arrival. Police found his bag and driver’s license near the body. Police say the car park doesn’t have security cameras and a witness said he heard the loud voice of a man.

"He was taken to hospital but died on arrival."

Probably more like "declared dead on arrival." This mistranslation always irks me.

But Nessie, though you are probably right, how do you know he didn't actually die right at the very moment they wheeled his stretcher into the hospital?

In Japanese it would be "病院で死亡が確認されました” (His death was confirmed at the hospital) In Japan, only a physician can declare a person dead, unless there are visible signs of decay or other indications that the person is indeed dead. (ie; decapitaition)
