Police in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture said Saturday that a man whose body was found on a riverbank on New Year's Eve died of multiple stab wounds.

The man's body was found early in the morning of Dec 31 by a local fisherman. Police have identified the victim as Yoshinori Koyanagi, 59. Fuji TV quoted a police spokesman as saying his body had numerous knife wounds across the upper half of his torso and head.

Local residents who knew Koyanagi told police that he was never one to hold a grudge or bear resentment.

According to police, Koyanagi was last seen alive by his wife at home after he told her he was going out to meet a friend at around 4 p.m. on Dec 30.

His car was found near the riverbank with his cell phone and wallet inside.

Yeah, I'm sure this was a real stand up guy. Obviously he pissed someone off enough for them to go mental.

Are you reading a different news article than the rest of us? Because that's not at all obvious.

Thanks Knox for "reading between the lines" for all of us that could not see what you see. Maybe he did piss somebody off, maybe it was just a random horrible crime, but now we do not know. RIP

Something tells me the friend is a key player in finding out what happened.

Did you know him personally ? Can you also get "pissed off" enough to stab someone several times ? (I'm sure glad you ain't my husband...)

Wasn't there was a similar murder in Toyama in December? Middle aged victim with multiple stab wounds to the face and torso? Very frightening to think these sort of maniacs are running around.

But that could've been just what he told his wife, and there was actually no "friend" involved. Something smells fishy nonetheless, and what a day to do it. RIP.

How is it "obvious" you've must of read recent news stories of just RANDOM attacks against innocent people. I don't see what is so obvious about it in the article. Unless I missed the part where it said he was a jerk Yakuza boss member?

Wow seems as thought th fishermen always find the bodies looks lik the Jcops can learn some searching skills from the fishermen. The story seems kind of fishy to me the last person who spoke to him was his wife and he said he was going to meet a friend but was later found with multiple stab wounds to the upper torso and head. I say check the car the car for blood then quetion the wife no wounds to the lower body this guy could have been attacked while sitting or driving and was caught off guard defensively. Last but not least visit the wife again this sounds strange no grudges or resentment!
