Astonishing is that it only took 8 months for the arrest, interrogation, trial and sentencing. Doubly astonishing is that they took video of at least a portion of the interrogation – long before it was suggested that the law be changed to require the practice.
Good on the system – a speedy trial and recorded statements.
By Japanese standards, the speed of the legal process in this case was absolutely head-spinning. Getting out aged 41 is still too early though. They should lock up this clown until such time as he is no longer a threat to anybody.
Only murder and not murder-robbery. Darn. Then it would have been, what, 18 years and a month? How about murder and late repayment of a debt? Just stick with 1st-degree murder and try to get life you lameos.
I'm sure many have seen a Japanese man mercilessly abusing a woman before. What would you do/did you do? I've seen some guy slapping up his woman late at night. I kept walking back and forth until they became aware that I was getting ready to pounce. My worry was, if I successfully knock him out, would she turn around and say I was the aggressor? Probably.
Wow, money holds a big part of this guy's soul here... That is absolutely nuts... All he had to do is say "sorry, cant pay you back" and walk away... There has to be something much more to this than anyone knows yet. It does not make sense.
Sorry for the girl, but if I were her I would have let it go. Surely there were signs of a mental nature prior to all this. You never know how an ex is going to act female or male so it is best to forget baout any monetary or material items exchanged during the relationship. 18 years, he should have gotten life but I guess since it was not premeditary, I woudl suspect, that is all he got. He'll be out while he is still young enough to begin a new life unlike her who will have none.

Most assuredly she would. Back in the US my policemen friends say the worst call they have to go on is domestic distrubance. The man can be beating the crap out of the woman but when the police stop him, the wife turns on the cops.
On topic, 18 years means this loser will be out at 41 or slightly before. In many societies this is young enough to start over; in Japan, bzzzz. Sorry, game over. He can't get an education, can't get a decent job, probably can't get a home loan from a bank. When he goes to the loan companies for rent money, well, he'll be in debt, heh heh, forever. Tough, eh?

Good to see the interview video being used in court. It kinda adds an aspect of believability to the whole process.
Prior to that I didn't believe a damn thing the prosecutors said.

Only 18 years for premeditated murder?!
J-police have absolutely no concept of logic or consistency whatsoever.
