I don't know what "countermeasures" they put up, but I figure it would be common place for train staff to have at least radios for communication. I know you can buy these small personal buzzers (i notice a lot of kids have em too) if you pull the string a very loud alarm goes off, I got some of my female friends that (you can get them at most electronics stores, yodobashi etc.).

For those of you who think this sentence is high I would totally disagree. The mental trauma those girls will have to face for the rest of their lives cannot even be measured. If he is a second time offender he most certainly deserves more time; as much as needed so he doesn't come out and do it again. Like others here...I say, Rope Him!!!!

Though capital punishment would fit the crime, 18 years is more than what criminals in other countries would get (also factoring in parole, good behavior, etc. etc.)

I can't stand these sorts of people. Rape is just as bad as murder in my eyes. I hope this guy gets turned into a cell block bitch while in prison. That would be divine punishment!

And what countries are you referring to? This is a serial rapist. It wasn't a one off. I'd say he deserves much more than 18 years.

If the man raped only 1 woman I could understand a somewhat shorter sentance, but 3 women???? 18 not long enough, I think 25 years would be good with strong psychological sessions. With that many sexual assaults, this guy can easily be a serial rapist, and of course its possible not many women came forward if he did more. 18 years isn't too far from what I would consider reasonalbe but the man has caused these women permanent emotional trauma.

In terms of the crime the sentence is too short but when compared with other sentences handed down for murder and rape in Japan I am pleasantly surprised that the goblin got 18 years.

Personally, I am not convinced you can rehabilitate a rapist short of chemical (or otherwise) casturation. Without recourse to such methods the only way to make sure this doesn't happen again is to lock him up for life. IMHO, of course.

To be honest, I'm almost stunned by this sentence. By Japanese standards, its almost unbelievably harsh. Normally he could have raped 100 women, as long as he bowed and did a gomen he'd have gotten off with no more then 8. 18 years though, by my standards, thats actually a reasonable sentence for a serial rapist. Finally someone actually having to pay for his crimes, rather then the typical slap on the wrist they normally give out.
