He was judged mentally competent, but in previous coverage of this story he was described as having a very low mental age.

remember that also.. good to see they tossed this dude in a cell for life though and not some 7 year sentence as per the norm.

This killer should be locked up in to mental institution for good. What is the point keeping him in jail? He will be good as an experiment for shrink. Life sentence is not real for the whole life, and he could be out perhaps in 10-15 years. Perhaps we will hear from his lawyer very soon lodging an appeal against sentence using magic words: 'MENTALLY UNFIT.' Words from judge don't impress me at all. Let me be his judge and you will see sentence he will get from me.

My response is either he gets the death sentence, or sent to San Quentin in the US and thrown into General Population. Here are my reasons:

1: The death penalty is much cheaper than life, or being in a mental institution. The cost of some lead, or some gas, whatever, is less than that of keeping the perp alive. So Japanese taxpayers keep the guy alive. Lovely.

2: Or as stated above, inmates (especially in the US) take a real hatred to those that harm kids. What would be left of his life would be a living hell, and a deserved punishment. I don't think Japanese jails are like this. The more fitting of my two choices, I think.

Dear Japanese Government, as an honest hard working tax payer it hurts me to see my hard earned tax yen being wasted on keeping this scum alive and feeding him! Please kill this worthless turd! Spare his kidneys and liver before you.
