A tragic scene unfolded in a supermarket in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, on Sept 5, as 32-year-old Shinji Kuroki went on a mass poking and squishing rage inside. Details of the total damage are sketchy but we received reports that packs of meat had holes poked in them with a finger and loaves of bread were thrown on the floor.
According to the Okayama Prefectural Police, Kuroki entered the supermarket at around 2:10 p.m. Then, over the next 15 minutes, a rampage against packaged food ensued, leaving 103 items destroyed beyond salability for a total of 59,880 yen in damages.
Police arrived on the scene soon after a clerk had dialed 110, but Kuroki had already left. Luckily, as the authorities were investigating, the suspect came back to pick up the bicycle he had forgotten. When the police questioned Kuroki he confessed to the violence.
Kuroki was quoted by police as saying: “Earlier the staff didn’t treat me right. I got upset.”
The company that runs the supermarket released a statement saying they would improve security at the supermarkets to avoid future tragedies from occurring.

but that doesn't address the cause of this petty rampage.

Oh come on. A nutter went bonkers in a supermarket. Some food got spoiled. This wasn't 'tragic' in the least. It wasn't 'violence'. It was just petty vandalism.
Charge him for the spoiled food and inconvenience to the shop, give him a stiff fine and anger management counselling if he needs it. Ban him from the shop if that makes the shop workers feel better.
Then give the writer of this piece a few lessons in how and when to use purple prose effectively.

When I first saw that word, I thought someone had got killed or something.
I guess it was tragic for the bread, though.

Meat Packs and bread.....RIP

Laughed out loud in the office at that. Best post of the month so far.

calling this a rampage and a tragic scene is trying to make people believe it was a murder scene inside of the grocery store but instead it was some angry jerk destroying food products...I agree with Cleo.

Maybe the part time workers (arubaito) were rude? Cold? Mean? I see so many lazy part time workers, especially young ladies, high school who should never be allowed to deal with customers! Also in so called Japanese family restaurants the service can be down right crappy!!

I'm suprised he didn't take a photo of himself posing with the mess he'd made, then putting it on Facebook or Twitter...oh wait, he was a customer not a member of staff. My mistake.

if the bill for the damaged food comes to 60,000 yen, well he should pay for it + and compo to staff for stress + compo to the company + the fine on top, + court costs.

With regard to the use of the words "tragic" and "rampage", the words "tongue" and "cheek" come to mind.

Copycat perpetrators are always a concern with food-related crimes. Let's just hope a slew of poker and squisher wannabes don't go on similar rampages. And remember, this comes in the wake of the "Man Arrested For Squirting Mayonnaise on High School Girls" (http://en.rocketnews24.com/2012/08/24/japanese-man-arrested-for-squirting-mayonnaise-on-unsuspecting-high-school-girls/).
For the time being, no pack of meat or loaf of bread is safe.

With the amount of times I've told my kids not to do stuff like this in supermarkets, it'll be no wonder if their pent-up stress causes them to snap in the future and go on a poking and squishing rampage. I'd better go and pick up some bubble wrap to try and curb the urges.

Glad no one was injured. Could have been much worse. He does need anger management.

Every time I here something like this there is always a dumb reason.

He can now tell his new roomates all about it......

Why didn't the staff call 110 immediately, I wonder.

This incident proved again that every human being in the world do not have similar DNA.

This story, and anything approximating it, instantly reminds me of the supermarket scene from Itami Juzo's superlative film "Tampopo".

Cleo, it's tongue in cheek (at 148 yen per 100g).

Apparently he was short of dough and wanted a raise. His behaviour went quite a rye...

It was a childish temper tantrum. My coworkers let boys get away with so many things and rude behavior yet are surprised that there are men like this.
