Man killed in hit-and-run incident in Saitama

SAITAMA —

Police said Monday they are on the lookout for the driver involved in a hit-and-run incident in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, in which a man was killed.

Police said they received an emergency call from a passing motorist at around 9 p.m., reporting that a man was lying on the road. They found the man, aged between 50 and 70, with serious injuries from an apparent hit-and-run incident. The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

According to police, marks on the road running southwest from the scene appear to indicate that the man had been dragged by a vehicle for several hundred meters.

Yet another drunk driver, who else would run someone down and fail to stop or at least inform the emergency services?

The real shocking point though: dragged for several hundred meters!!!

I agree that the roadsense is almost suicidal here but nothing in this story suggests he was in the middle of the road before the car hit him. The driver should've stopped.

We need more traffic signals perhaps?

    @IfeelImust - not necessarily.

Hit and run is fast becoming the norm here in Japan....maybe it's being taught at the driving schools?

That's at least two football fields!! Innocent driver or not, you cant run someone down and then drag him/her for a few hundren meters. Thats insane.

Yep! I'd go with the driver being drunk too. Not because he ran away, but because it happened in Saitama.

50 to 70? That is a big difference.

The number of people here running red lights is appalling. Wouldnt surprise me if thats what the driver did to save a few minutes and nailed this guy at a cross-walk. Saddest part is that there are never any cops or cameras set up to catch these bimbos in the act. Cops know it`s happening too. Your tax dollars hard at work.

woundedsamurai1. Anyone other than a drunk would stop and at least inform the emergency services, unless of course it was a drunk who didn't speak Japanese! How anyone could just mow someone down drag them for god knows how far defeats me! He must be having nightmares right now or he is not human!

Some of the roads in this country are so dark and quiet I wouldnt be surprised if its possible to be lying completely undetected for a good length of time. Cant help but feel that if the driver had stopped then the chap might have survived. Being dragged cant have helped.

pointofview, I 100% agree the amount of people who run red lights is quite appalling! However it is quite another matter knocking a pedestrian down and dragging them several hundred yards!

Bikers and pedestrians walking in poorly lit numbered state roads without wearing visible clothing is PC in this country.

sad and gruesome. it must have been a very old person, would be my bet. small, hard to see, slow moving and erratic.

interesting that this is top news. i wonder what the criteria to make national English headlines in Japan is?

There is so MUCH money to be made from the powers that be IF the law of stopping at a red light was actually enforced. As others have posted, the number of fly throughs at a red light are staggering. Cameras. Fines... POLICING!

It's time for a national raod safety wake up campaign! TV ads....posters and cameras on traffic lights, do it do it do it....just get on with it!!!!!

How big a difference depends on whether you are closer to 50 or to 70.
