I have no idea what his refusal to identify himself is about, but it could be he wants to keep his family out of it.

Instead of being homeless and lonely he can have friends in prison and a warm bed at night.

‘‘I threw out everything when I decided to kill myself,’’...‘‘I am sorry,’’... What a comedian. Did cops trace his fingerprints in archives? Perhaps not and they were hoping that accused will talk in court. Now even that failed, when he die just burry him next to 'unknown soldier' tomb. From no0w on he will at least have his number for ID in his future crimes when he come out from jail. This is another 'shrink' matter.

Seems that Mari Horikita's ideal partner - Mr X - is going up the river for a few years - she'll have to delay those wedding plans for a while!

Can't help but wonder if his sentence would have been different if he had identified himself.

Why even prosecute? For all the police know he could be some wanted fugitive. Just hold him in custody until he decides to give up his identity.

I often wondered what would happen if someone refused to give their name. Do people take this charade this far very often? Next time I'm in trouble with the law I think I will try it. Banzai!

This guy is just another crazed semi-senior citizen and should be locked up for a lot longer 5.5 years. - No name, no shame!

    Man: I am not saying!

    J-cops: Whats your name?

    Man: I am not saying!

Judge: Well what is your name?

Man: I am not saying, but I will say I am sorry!

Judge: Fine, it took 6 months to get a gomenasai from you. I will sentence you to 5 years in prison!

    Man: Thank you

Nice one blvtzpk! Actually, I was just typing the same thing myself, when I noticed your post.

I like the fact that the Mr X in question is an older man, which is OK with her. And seeing she's just 21 now, he'll be out of chokey before she hits her marriage deadline of 30 y-o-a. Perfect!!!

5 and half years for burning down an abandoned two story house? Was there a danger of other houses catching?

    Seems like an over-stiff sentence.

Did cops trace his fingerprints in archives?

Not everyone has been fingerprinted. Further, he may have altered his. I am sure they looked though.
