Man arrested for trying to steal cop's gun in Aichi on same day he is released from jail
AICHI —
A man was arrested Sunday night after assaulting a police officer and trying to steal his gun in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture. The suspect had just been released from jail the same day.
Hisanori Umezu, 39, was arrested by a police officer, 33, after he attacked the officer with a cutter knife and tried to steal his pistol. According to police, the suspect assaulted the officer at a police box in front of Toyohashi station around 5 p.m. Police say the suspect was released from prison in Kyoto the same day and came to Toyohashi by train. He was quoted by police as saying, “I didn’t have any money at all. I needed a gun.”

Good thinking Japanese penal system dorks... Leave an ex-inmate without any means of support. Just open the gates and say; 'gambatte ne' sure ain't gonna work. Just as we saw the other guy who stabbed an infant in a pusher somewhere in a department sore a year or so ago. Penniless, he was sleeping in deserted cars, buildings and didn't have anywhere to go. What a retarded system.

Well, that was stupid. Hmm, you can kiss away fresh air for like another, 15-30 years? And why do Japanese people insist on stabbing so much? Oh my gosh, most of these crimes have to do with a freaking dude with a knife stabbing people.

What, if anything, does this say about the Japanese police force's stance on firearm usage? If he was genuinely after the gun (and not, as has been plausably suggested, just looking to go back to jail) it would seem that Japanese police are so reluctant to use their sidearms that criminals feel they can attack (with merely a box cutter, in this case) without serious risk of death/injury.
Or, of course, the guy could just be nuts.
