Police have arrested a 69-year-old man on charges of assaulting his former wife in front of the Saitama District Court building.
The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, when Takahisa Matsumoto, a resident of Ageo, Saitama Prefecture, slashed his ex-wife's left cheek with a knife in front of the entrance to the court, Sankei Shimbun reported.
The man also suffered minor self-inflicted injuries, as he was being subdued by court employees and people present at the site.
The woman, in her 60s, was taken to a hospital and although she was seriously injured, there is no threat to her life, police said.
According to police, Matsumoto has been appealing for an annulment of his divorce at the Saitama District Court and was there on Tuesday to complete procedures related to the case.

I guess the divorce will be finalized instead.

...so he slashed her.
As ever, J news trumps fiction.

She left the home almost 30 years ago, and filed the divorce papers without her husband's knowledge. He had no idea they were divorced until recently. She had remarried in the meantime...when he found out all this, he was livid.

Wow, wonder why anyone would ever want to divorce this catch. Saitama. Again.

Filing divorce without notifying the spouse likely illegal, so the law would be on his side, so there's no point to slash out when he could be winning the case.
But if they have been living separately for 30 years, why would he even want to stay married?

Theatre of the absurd by the looks & sounds of it!

Not saying I'm in favor of it, I just thought the story left out a lot.

I wondered why in the court documents it asks "is he likely to bring a KNIFE to the court?"
It seemed such a Japanese thing to ask in an official court document...
But I get it now!!

Yet another control freak.

Why are there so many crazies in Saitama >_<

So he was livid. And to make matters worse, Matsumoto seemed to be under the influence of drink when he slashed his ex-wife's face. Yes, it was like adding fuel to the fire. It's no wonder he ended up slashing his former wife. But it was good for her to have escaped death.

As I said a few days ago, Saitama sure is gunning it to be first in crimes for this fiscal year! It's like watching construction companies fall over themselves trying to use up all the extra money before the end of March!
At least being just in front of the court house they could, if they had the stones, just have a judge quickly throw the book at him and send him off to prison then and there. I know, of course, they can't, but you get what I mean.

What a monster! You really have to wonder what's going through the minds of nutters like this... very nasty piece of work.

Sounds like he has a rather violent character - which could very well be the reason the wife wanted to divorce him in the first place...

Thanks for the info Himajin. It seems that Japanese men have a ridiculously hard time letting go. After 30 years of separation, this guy should have moved on.

I don't think so. It's the only way to get clear of a spouse that is MIA (but alive somewhere and able to incur debts in your name). You need to show you've been separated for a certain delay (3 yrs ? ) to get the divorce granted without the partner filling the form. The administration probably tried to inform him but that seems to be a guy that has not been to register or update his residency at city hall in 3 decades...

It seems he had a lot in his chest. Daring slashing someone in court is a sign he had nothing to lose.

More of the human ape's emotional explosions.. We patronize animals, and yet behave in a worse manner. Strange.
