This sounds a little funny to me. He was able to purchase tickets the following day to Okinawa, the girl didn't try to alert anyone in the airport, they were found walking on the streets? Were they walking as a couple hand and hand, smiling while eating and drinking some refreshments in the summer time? He denies that he has done anything, come on....this story is funny..
Many readers seem puzzled as to why the girl didn't try and flee in the airport lounge, on the street or wherever. This is real life, not the movies or TV. It is very easy to intimidate someone with the threat of violence, especially if that person has grown up being mollycoddled or has never seen violence. The perp might have said to the girl, "Don't even think about running or calling out, otherwise I'll find you. Just remember what happened to your mother." That would be more than enough to petrify the girl. She would follow him like a puppy dog after that.
I remember when I was a teenager, a guy wielded a knife in front of me. I froze. I had never experienced anything like that. Afterwards, people told me I could have run away, or used a rubbish bin or something to deflect the knife, but that's fiction.
Smartacus, I completely agree that any person would freeze under such circumstances. However, we are not talking about a split of a second, but about a few days (a week I think?), time long enough to wake up and send some kind of signal. I can understand her distress and I don't know how I would react under such circumstances, but usually the survival instinct should prompt you to do something.
Should have arrested him before on account that he was stalking her AGAIN after kidnapping her once already. That qualifies as a clear and present danger and the police should have been able to arrest him before he committed these latest crimes by virtue of the fact that he violated her before. In other alleged stalking cases the police can't move if the stalker hasn't made a move yet, but what about cases like this when the perp made the move once before, and is maneuvering to make it again? If this is all the police could do within the law, the law HAS to be changed.
Makes you wonder why the airline let this guy board the plane. If a wanted person checks in at the airport (domestic included), the computer alerts the checkin agent, the agent presses a button and stalls the procedure until the security guys and/or cops arrive. How in the hell did he get on the plane at Haneda? The news people were crowing about how brilliant the cops were in catching this guy. Somebody wasn't doing their job.
Tests for civil servants, including police, are the easiest in Okinawa. Those who wish to teach, police, and otherwise lord over their fellow citizens, but lack the edge to pass the mainland prefecture tests inevitably end up in Okinawa. Come on down and visit someday.
The police in this case did their mainland brothers a favor catching the bad guy so quickly after the mayhem he caused up there.
Perhaps he threatened to kill her. Perhaps he had her house keys and her credit cards and the ability to access all her worldly assets. Perhaps he threatened to stalk her all the days of his life, even if he goes to prison and then gets out again. Who could she turn to? Having lost all faith in the cops, and watching him kill her mother, perhaps she decided to play a long hand...
I'm wondering why they let this suspect wear his stylish michael jackson hat while doing the perp walk? not the moon walk, the perp walk.
ROFL
I visited the local police station to take of a parking sticker for my car. There were about 20 j-cops in there just smoking and joking . I really had to hold it together to keep from busting out laughing. I just sat there with this smirk on my face.
The only good thing from this case is that the police wil start dealing with stalkers more seriously and more severe punishments will be introduced for stalkers.
There have been other prominent stalker cases in years past, but there seems to be little change in how they are dealt with. I doubt this incident will change much, either. Sad.
Perhaps that's because that's the way the law is written.
Perhaps it needs the general public or more importantly the law makers to change the law to ensure this kind of thing never happens again.
Or perhaps the Japanese police are cr@p and it's all their fault.
I think the girl is part of this murder. She might not have killed the mother, but did she allow it? Did nothing to stop or help. She had options to contact police before, during and after.
I think we are not getting much update because the police are now looking into all the questions a woman leaves when she gets on a plane with the guy who just murdered her mother and is using only a knife to do it.
Did he hold the knife on her through check-in? Getting onto the plane?

So I can understand this poor girl's dilemma.

She didn't file charges even though the police insisted her to do so.
