A man who was arrested for attempted murder after steering his car onto a pavement and hitting 14 pedestrians in Nagoya in February 2014, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The Nagoya District Court handed down the sentence Wednesday on Ryota Onoki, 31.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred mid-afternoon close to the city's central station and the driver was caught on the spot. Fourteen pedestrians were injured.

Onoki, who was unemployed, pleaded guilty and said he had tried to kill as many people as he could with his car.

Not enough time in my opinion, how about at least one year per victim.

It should be twelve years for each person he injured. He admitted trying to kill as many people as possible, so it should be 14 counts of attempted murder.

We are not told the extent of the injuries but guaranteed there are some if not all that are scarred for life physically or mentally. Glad he is off the streets.

Seems like a short amount of time for such a serious offense. I wonder if this kind of light sentencing is common in Japan.

this guy should be banned for driving in life after serving his sentence but 12 years sentencing is just too short for 14 potential lives..... 12 yrs x 14 should be more applicable ....

i find it hard to believe that he actually wanted to kill someone. i mean, how could you hit 14 people with a car and not kill one of them?
