Man who demanded Sakai's release gets suspended jail term

TOKYO —

The Tokyo District Court on Monday sentenced a 44-year-old man to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, for obstructing police duties by threatening to bomb a police station unless actress Noriko Sakai was released.

Judge Toshiaki Fujii ruled that Masami Kambara, 44, committed a ‘‘malicious crime’’ in sending an e-mail message to Fuji Television Network Inc on Aug 27 saying he had planted a time bomb at Wangan Police Station in Tokyo, where Sakai was being detained on drug charges, and the station would ‘‘be turned into a sea of fire’’ unless police released her. Sakai, 38, received a suspended term for possessing and using illegal stimulant drugs in November.
