Mie dentist arrested after massaging woman’s chest

By Philip Kendall

A dentist in Mie Prefecture has been arrested after fondling a young woman’s chest in the back room of his surgery while claiming that doing so would help fix her misaligned teeth.

The incident occurred on Oct 29 last year. The woman in her 20s visited a clinic in the city of Kameyama for a dental exam. After noting that her teeth were misaligned, the 53-year-old dentist allegedly remarked, “The muscles in your chest are tight, so I need to massage them,” and after escorting her into an adjoining room, proceeded to touch and fondle her chest.

The girl, who “felt that something was amiss”, later talked about the strange practice with her family, who decided to contact the local authorities. On Feb 4, the dentist was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault.

Priceless...

This shows a level of intellect is lacking in both patient and dentist. Its easy to see why the there has been an increase in the ORE ORE scam even with all the publicity. Its sad to see the trust Japanese put in each other abused.

He was just checking to see if she needed more than just dental implants.

You mean a chest massage doesn't straighten crooked teeth?!

OMG, this is classic! LOL

Last time I try and tell the wife her teeth need straightening. Thanks for nothing Dude.

zenkan: "abuse is abuse, however comically naive you my think the victim is. If this had been a school bullying story, everyone would have been up in arms."

She was indeed naive, and should have immediately shouted out assault. And comparing it to bullying is ludicrous. In the case of bullying the victim is also bullied into keeping quiet, especially if by an authority figure. In this case it sounds like the woman just felt 'hmmm... that's a bit weird'.

Anyway, I'm glad her family talked her into realizing it was abuse and that they contacted the authorities. This guy is a scumbag, and there are probably heaps of others like him that get away with it.

She ain't the sharpest tool in the box, is she?

Nobody deserves to be sexually harassed, but I can't help but feel that her naivety/stupidity is pretty much consent. If this was a child it would be a different story. Any 20 year old woman should know better. While the doctor is clearly in the wrong for initiating this, I'm pretty sure that she went along with it for the sole purpose of being able to get a nice settlement out of it. There is really no other logical reason why someone would go along with this. Then again this is Japan and I quit assuming that standard logic applies here years ago.

The crap I am reading within your responses is a perfect example of why women have trouble speaking out, and reporting molestation.

Do any of you think your stupid little jokes and quips are something that's limited to the internet? Do you think victims of assault like this poor young woman haven't actually heard words like this from their friends, from strangers around them immediately following an attack they have raised the alarm about, from their family, from the police?

The fact that the administration of this news site allows the kind of puerile humour, casual sexism and offensive victim-blaming that consistently goes on here is just another example of what women have to put up with. You're joking about the assault going further, that it wasn't that serious, that she is at fault.

This is utter bull. Would any of you be so amused if this had happened to you? Would you stand there in the kitchen over your subdued daughter who had come home and said, "Something happened at the dentist today..." and say, in one breath, "Why didn't you do something earlier?" and "At least it wasn't a serious attack."

I can only hope you're a group of 13-year-old boys who still think it's funny to fart in your friends' faces. If not, there is no hope for you.

I don't know if she was that naiive. Japanese people tend to have a lot of faith in their medical practitioners, and rarely question them. When a trusted doctor or a dentist tells you to come into this room for an xray, or lie down so I can check your vitals, then you just do it, right?

A few years ago I went to a dentist who insisted on using laughing gas to help me relax during the procedure. No, he wasn't molesting me - he was just trying to cover up nasty substandard work! He drilled and filled my tooth so badly that I couldn't close my mouth properly for several months afterwards. I didn't know at the time that he was a notorious "yabu" or quack who routinely ripped his patients off with shoddy work and poor quality materials.

Then I went to another dentist, who gasped when he saw the state of my mouth, and called his staff members over to come and take a look. They all stood around with very serious looks on their faces, and said "Tessa-san, honto ni ayashii (this is very supicious)." Then, they fixed my tooth very nicely for me. They were so good at it that I let them fix my whole mouth over the next year. I got a great smile now!

It wouldn't happen to me, or anyone in my family. Because we don't have the "dumb gene".

Why is why their medical practitioners always screw the over. If you let someone grope your breasts to fix your teeth, or in any situation for that matter, you are naiive.

The crap I am reading within your responses is a perfect example of why women have trouble speaking out

If a 20-something woman can't stand up to someone groping her and has to ask her parents if it was right, I'm not sure if that woman has anything worthwhile to say anyway.

Why is sexual assault so funny to some people? It's not.

@slumdog

There are actually scores of erotic videos of this "molestation by dentist" genre in Japan. The dentist in this story was undoubtedly "inspired" by these sorts of videos.

I agree. I've found dentistry here to not only be to a high standard, but also extremely cheap.

"fondling a young woman’s chest in the back room of his surgery while claiming that doing so would help fix her misaligned teeth" - article

Groping his patient may not have helped with the misaligned teeth but rape was only a nitrous blast away. Lock him up.

I agree. I've found dentistry here to not only be to a high standard, but also extremely cheap.

Uh, have you actually seen the state of the average Japanese person's teeth?

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Back on topic please.

Here they do a lot of massage and acupuncture with pressure points far removed from the site one's ailments. She may have thought nothing of it at first, and releasing neck muscle tension (as well as grinding rough edges off the teeth) can help with something like TMJ disorder. She thought it suspicious and said something to her family, problem solved. I see no need to be so snide about it. Know to, that ore-ore is flourishing in the US, as the "grandparent scam".

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Terrible. And if it happened to my daughter, I probably would have visited the dentist myself!

@Maria, the comments are because men are totally different.

If a young man told people that a female dentist did a similar thing, within days men everywhere would be complaining of tooth aches.

But seriously, it is terrible. And men who don't understand why the girl didn't speak up earlier don't know much about women, and especially the vulnerability of females in Japan to authority figures.

IF Japanese became open like the west with stories of abuse by parents, teachers, religious figures etc, there would be an avalanche of stories.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Dammit, doctor: You're a dentist, not a cardiologist!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Similar stories like this happens through out the world only some dentist will put the patient to sleep and do a lot more than just massaging.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

One thing you have to take into account in cases of rape or molestation is the embarassment of being a victim. It's prevalent in the U.S. and I'd imagine it's even worse in Japan.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

It's holistic medicine. Trying to influence the flow of chi that goes to the mouth.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Some of you just need to picture themselves in her shoe. Not everyone is able to think straight instantly and not everybody's flight and fight responses are the same. Especially if this was her first time getting groped or 'massaged', however you want to put it, victim might not have even been believing what was really going on till it was over.

That some of you are just laughing at it or hinting at stupidity is terrible. She's the victim here.

A 20-something girl, might still believe and trust people, especially since "dentist" really is a profession that should inspire trust!! Why do I have to always be on alert about everything? Mistrusting everyone? Always prepared to slap and kick anyone who approaches me? I'm guilty of being mistrusting to any guy unless he proves himself. All medical professionals I trust most are women, and those that are not, I have either worked with in my life or I get my bf to accompany me, and life shouldn't be like that.

As far as relaxation goes, maybe she was nervous and he abused of that premise, or maybe she couldn't think straight because she was a bit frightened too..we don't know. Or are you always able to think 100% straight, no matter where you are? I know I am a nervous wreck at the dentist, and I had to change many dentists in order to find one that inspires trust and that can handle a nervous wreck at drill-point like me without having to use sleep gas or anything similar. (the reason for that? My dentist as a kid would constantly show off how bad my teeth are to his colleagues and other kids, and being sarcastic to me while he worked on my teeth)

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Maria, I think everyone believes this attack was serious and the dentist is scum.

It is just a story that defies belief because of the despicable actions of the dentist and the naivety of the patient.

Clearly, the dentist was preying on that naivety by pointing out an ego busting fault with her teeth and providing a seemingly ego boosting physical interaction.

I even had to explain to my wife how something like this could have happened. And, she is the one who once said she wouldn't be able to do anything if someone touched her incorrectly.

Plus, men (and a lot of women) like puerile humor.

But I do hope the girl recovers without too much trauma. She made the correct move by talking to her parents and calling the police to bust this creep.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

As usual some posters take the comments on this site way too seriously. It's not like these allegedly offensive and silly comments are being made to the victim. no one is telling her you're stupid or it was your own fault or holding it against her. i think a little justifiably observing that she must be a little slow if she believed that groping her breasts would fix her teeth. still, all's well that ends well and the sukebe bloke got his just desserts and she learned something about teeth.

The girl, who “felt that something was amiss”...

I love those inverted commas!

The crap I am reading within your responses is a perfect example of why women have trouble speaking out, and reporting molestation.

You are absolutely right, and it's a salient point.

For what it's worth, my little dig was actually directed at the dentist, not the girl. I certainly had no intention of debasing the seriousness of her situation.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

So only after she got home she wondered if "something is amiss"?? Really.... this is a case where the dentist should be released and the woman should be booked for pure stupidity...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maria: "The crap I am reading within your responses is a perfect example of why women have trouble speaking out, and reporting molestation."

While many of the jokes were made in very poor taste, and were completely insensitive, that is not the reason why so many women are reluctant to speak out. It's a societal thing, and fortunately it is changing little by little. Guys like this scumbag of a dentist deserve prison, and any police that will pull a 'what's your sexual background' stunt when a woman does come forward deserve to be fired or at the very least sit through hours of sensitivity training, but you cannot deny the woman should have spoken out sooner. These terrible jokes and comments came out only AFTER it was revealed that she just thought it was 'strange' and her family talked her into reporting it. No one is blaming the woman, and I doubt any one denies the blame lies on the dentist, but it does not mean she was slow to react, and it is not because of jokes or what have you.

Society here needs to make a big push forward in terms of letting people know it's okay to report abuse, and that there is no shame in it, and needs SERIOUS punishment for guys (or gals) who do this kind of thing.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I believe her.

Had a family friend at our local club. She (married, mid-40's) went for her 1st full-body massage, next day her husband told us she sat up at 03:00am and said "He also massaged my breasts". LOL.

But hope the doc gets a punishment and licence yanked.

@Chubbinessfan:

As usual some posters take the comments on this site way too seriously.

all's well that ends well and the sukebe bloke got his just desserts and she learned something about teeth.

It's not like these allegedly offensive and silly comments are being made to the victim

A little microaggression followed by another sexist dig, finish off with a paltry excuse.

The comments are not being taken "too seriously", they are being taken just the right amount of seriousness.

People think they can make some crude comment about a serious subject involving people, then laugh it off as just a joke and accuse their critics of being over-sensitive. It's easy to make fun of something that doesn't affect you, and when you do so, remember that you are not being funny, just ignorant and hostile.

The woman in the article may not read this site, and I'm very sure she doesn't, but women who have been victims do. Such comments as are written here offer humiliation, mockery and blame.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Very seriously, the dentist is a perv. In fact, he's a molester. What he did is despicable and criminal. The poor girl, however, has been so programmed by society to defer to "authority " figures that the result was her being molested by a person entrusted with her physical health. She's the victim not only of such molestation, but also the victim of dumbing down by societal pressure to defer to authority contrary to what her own instinct was likely telling her was a clear violation of her dignity.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

The woman in the article may not read this site, and I'm very sure she doesn't

Maria,

What makes you so sure?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

@Chubbinessfam,

It's not like these allegedly offensive and silly comments are being made to the victim

How do you know she doesn't read JT?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

you cannot deny the woman should have spoken out sooner.

Considering the article doesn't make mention of when she spoke out, that is up for debate. She may have gone home and immediately talked with her family. The family may have gone to the police that evening. There is no way of knowing whether or not she could have spoken out sooner, as the article makes no mention whatsoever of when she spoke out.

As well, the translation of "something was amiss" sounds weird in English, but the Japanese (likely something along the lines of "nanka, okashii deshou") is perfectly natural.

The dentist was arrested February 4th. Anyone who has ever filed a criminal complaint in this country knows that it takes a few months of processing before the person is formally charged, particularly as the suspect is often given a chance to settle with the person filing the complaint before they are formally charged.
