More than 1,000 inmates suffer food poisoning at Osaka prison

TOKYO —

A food poisoning outbreak at a prison in Sakai, Osaka, last week affected more than 1,000 prisoners, the justice ministry and prison officials said.

According to TV Asahi, 1,074 prisoners suffered from diarrhea and stomach aches on Tuesday and Wednesday and had to be treated at the prison hospital.

Osaka Prefecture health officials conducted a sanitary inspection of the prison kitchen on Thursday, but have so far failed to pinpoint the cause of the food poisoning, TV Asahi reported.

Prison officials say that about 40 prisoners work in the kitchen each day, supervised by two guards.

Health officials suspended cooking in the kitchen for three days until Saturday, with food being brought in from outside the prison to supplement stockpiles of emergency food for the 2,500 inmates, TV Asahi reported.

Pretty sh!tty place to be, but the kitchen is often the best place to work in any prison and it's only the trusted inmates who get kitchen jobs, so the two screws would have nothing to worry about. No danger there.

The sadists that work Japanese prison are going to both love and hate this. On one hand, its an excuse to met out punishments for not doing duties and being totally neat. On the other hand, the mess is large and they will be inconvenienced.

I have that feeling that people in prisons in Japan just disappear from society.

but have so far failed to pinpoint the cause of the food poisoning

No one ever had any doubts that all radiation contaminated rice and meat from Fukushima ends up in joints and will kill the convicts, if not the guards together with them, but it shouldn't cause diarrhea at first place. Now, what caused the diarrhea is a puzzle, nobody understands.

There's easier methods to restrict yard time for the inmates.

@Export, you sound way too knowledgeable about prisons, but something to think about, the kitchen best place there in prison huh?? Anyway, Osaka?? Nothing ever surprises me about poor Osaka!

What kind of food do they get in Japanese prisons?

Do those on death row get one good last meal?

  • 0

    It"S ME

The food in japanese prisons is strictly controlled by weight, ingredients to make sure everyone gets the same. Every bowl is checked and weighted. But still mass-cooked like in any Cafeteria.

The Last Meal is called breakfast in japan, same as with more and more overseas prisons that are cancelling the "Last Meal".

Do they still have the Wakayama curry spice girl in that jail ?

Do those on death row get one good last meal?

No, they are abruptly informed with no prior notification that day is the day on which they are to be executed and -- after a brief interlude with the prison chaplain -- escorted directly to the gallows.

Death row inmates in Japan don't go to prison. They stay in detention centers until they're executed. A prison in Japan is a correctional institution.

Obviously they are getting the radioactive rice from Fukushima. It's the only possible explanation.

Is there a trail here to follow? First the 52 workers at Daiichi have the same symptoms as these prisoners and others who may consumed foodstuff purchased in bulk from what I've gleemed from the comments posted.

Trusted inmates work in the kitchen. The food must have been bad. It must be devil guards in that prison.

Tjhis is probably due to a "mottainai" culture of Japan and poor hygene of food workers as always. No surprise here.

Too much misinformation floating around here. 'people disappear In Japanese prisons' etc. What utter nonsense and baloney. What does happen is that people go to these places to be punished strictly & usually 'fairly'. They also have many opportunities to learn trades and other skills. And unlike the prisons in the West, have lower rates of recidivism. We have a few things to learn ...
