Mother, 2 other family members held for abusing 5-yr-old daughter

A mother and two other family members living in a house in Kamagaya City, Chiba Prefrecture, were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of abusing the woman's five-year-old daughter.

The woman, Miho Kawazu, 22, and two other unidentified family members were arrested for allegedly punching and kicking the girl in a stream of abuse that reportedly began in December 2008. In July 2009, Kawazu brought the girl to a hospital in Kashiwa City, and at that time, the doctor reported to police that he thought the girl's condition was strange.

Kawazu was quoted as saying that she hit the girl as a form of discipline because "she kept wetting herself outside of the bathroom."

Police did not say why it took them until now to make an arrest and added that the investigation is still under way as the three have given conflicting statements.

Poor little angel! Abused for something that she could not help. I'm sure the stress from the abuse made her wet herself more. Bedwetting is quite common and most outgrow it. Pretty lame family for abusing her.

according to yomiuri, the 2 family members are not minors. they are this woman's 42-year-old mother and her 31-year-old husband (the woman's step father). their names are also disclosed.

Of COURSE they didn't! That would require admitting their incompetence.

What a sick sick family. The abuse of children in this country is nothing new but the reporting of it is. I hope stories like this grab leading coverage on tv news and the faces of the mother and her (future hooligan) kids who beat on their then 3 year old (now 5) year old sibling are shown on the tv for all to see. People like this really REALLY make me sick. This little girl must have been so scared every time she saw one her family approaching thinking she was in for a beating. So SO sad. The police officer who the doctor reported this to in 2009 should be dragged out the back and flogged.

And Japanese newspaper said this girl has been living in a child protection center since last July as this mother had called the authority and said she wasn't sure if she could raise this girl. I am glad this girl is in a safe place now.

thank you JT, for revising the article :)

The most important thing about this article is that they were living in a a house. Sick family

If the Dr. wouldn't have said something like the majority here do. Then possibly this girl would of mysteriously had fallen out a window.

even though it's been taking the police long time to arrest these 3 people, i am glad that the girl had already been removed from the family. i don't know HOW a mother can hurt her own child, but it is more surprising that the grandmother was also abusing the little girl.. it is just sick.

We can imagine how the 22-year old mother was brought up by this 42-year old grandmother...

Cases such as this represent the worst form of child abuse, with the victim having no where to turn if all the surrounding adults are in on the deal.

Although there is no mention of "bed wetting", it probably also occurred. There is a simple "remedy" for that: Raise the foot of the bed a few centimetres so that the feet are slightly higher than the head. (A couple of bricks could be used). Can't hurt, might help - in fact it's good for grown-ups too! NEVER punish a child for wettinng him/herself, it only makes matters worse.

Disgusting!

Behind the outward "safety country" image, statistics show that cases of child abuse ( in various forms ) is increasing year on year in Japan and, as far as kids are concerned, Japan is only about as safe as other countries. Experts predict that this might be just the tip of the iceberg, as a lot of these cases never actually get reported.

It's a fundamental social problem in Japan, but one that they continue to sweep under the carpet.

Wow Congratulations for this doctor! If he was selfish like so many other doctors this girl would still be suffering abuse by those three animals. That mother only gave her daughter to authorities after they found out her crime. If the doc hadn`t called the police she would still be doing nasty things to this girl. Funny that only after her crime was discovered she declares she is ¨not capable of raising her daughter¨ probably alleging she has mental problems...and the conflicting statements from the other 2 probably refer to each different person pursuing mental disorders...I hope the three of them have what they deserve when they pass from this life to another kind of life because nobody can wait anything from the japanese judiciary system. If you have a problem with the justice in Japan just allege you´re dumb and they will release you...

Miho Kawazu, 22

So she had the daughter when she was 17 eh? Sigh... this record just keeps skipping...

punching and kicking the girl in a stream

This woman should get dropkicked into a river. And the 2 others should get bodyslammed under a waterfall.

Words fail me.

those 3 subhumans are just another example of how cheap if not worthless a child's life is in this country. shame on japan and these scum(mushi-kera) that abuse, torture and murder children for their own insane pleasure. I know lots of wonderful j-parents out there, but these ones are what drag this country down the sewer.

I haven't been keeping track, but does anyone know how many consecutive days we've had an article like this on some incident of child abuse or death - seems like at least daily for past three weeks.......really tragic.

Lincolnman I have noticed this too, there are child abuse and child murders listed daily for a few months almost now. It is making me sick hearing about this parents and often many of them young parents abusing and killing their kids.

fishy: Thanks for the info. At least this poor little girl out of the hand of these 3 cruel people.

Parents here really have to learn what discipline is and what it isn't. I can't stand hearing any more of these stories. Two things would quickly reduce the number of child abuse cases. 1) have schools give condoms to teenagers and educate people on contraception 2) educate all parents-to-be on how to discipline their child WITHOUT using any physical punishment.

my ex gf in los angeles (Japanese American) told me her mom used to swing her around the house by her hair...fortunately LA didn't have high apartment buildings for disgruntled parents to loft their children. Also fortunate - the J-Police, even though an 8+ month delay - managed to save the child's life - but now what happens? Orphanage? Other relatives? Adoption?

That's just cruel!

Poor little girl. How I wish I could give her a hug. By the way, aren't there district nurses and developmental health checks in this country? I'm sure that most countries have a system to keep an eye on new mothers and babies. Still, I guess that some families still slip through the cracks.

I have a theory. Because they are incompetent.

Tragical...Again,another crime involving japanese woman(within 2 days after Osaka kid was stabbed by a stranger woman on road)!!i remember someone was arguing with me last time for saying ' japanese society is becoming more selfish,self-centered,and lacking family morality'. This crime is another example for that and commited by woman.Pachinko addicts,Child abuses and Random stabbings...hmm..now,women are contributing their part too.
