Mother arrested for beating 5-year-old daughter to death in 2004

A 36-year-old woman was arrested in Ome City, suburban Tokyo, on suspicion of beating her oldest daughter to death in 2004, police said Friday.

Haruka Matsuura was 5 years old when she died in August 2004 from subdural hematoma, or blood clotting in the brain. Haruka's mother, Reiko Matsuura, was arrested on suspicion of assault resulting in death after police investigations revealed that Haruka had received a significant trauma to the head before she died.

Matsuura is suspected to have violently shaken the girl, but she denies the charges. "I didn't do anything that would have killed her," she was quoted as saying.

Hang this one out to dry as well. Again, I don't understand the mentality of those people who kill their kids. If you didn't want the child to start with, you don't do the dirty.

This mother has an older son and he was the one to tell the police that this woman killed his little sister!!!! the boy was young at that time, but now he's a teenager and he was able to report that to the police!!! See!! Someone's always watching mom!!!

2004? 5 years ago? What took them so long with the autopsy?

Yelnats: The mother had told the police it was an accident, but recently, the girl's brother who grew up and became a teenager told the police he witnessed the whole thing. Basically, the police didn't have enough evidence to decide it was a child abuse 5 years ago. I don't know what the dad was doing or what he said back then, though..

and the kids are not her biological kids.. their dad and his ex-wife's.

Becareful here there have been cases in UK where mothers were sent to prison on "baby shake" syndrome cases based on so called experts testimonal only to be released after many years as experts were found to be wrong.I personally would not judge unless there were other occassion this woman abused the child. Also child was 5yrs old when i was kid i tripped, fell walked into doors so we not have all the facts.

You are right JasUK - an emotional response as a mother of a 5 year old daughter - I apologise. But I would be surprised if this is accidental as there is a witness to the whole thing, (according to other posters) and the kid was not a baby at the time.

Oh yes, let's examine the facts before drawing conclusions on their guilt, shall we?

They are a Japanese couple.

Second marriage with step kids.

They live in suburban Tokyo.

Guilty!

And the Nation is encouraging people to have more kids?????

I could only imagine this type of atrocity increasing with that propspect especially with beatings as are reported more frequently here.

Why can't these people try to seek help? I'm sure there are several avenues that they can approach to deal with their personal issues. It must be their traditional pride and in most of these cases, the outcome is always a tragedy.

I don`t think people like this see it as a personal issue. More their god given right to treat the kids they brought into this world/are responsible for raising as punchbags for their own gratification.

The one and only positive thing to come out of these stories - I am starting to feel like one of the BEST parents on the planet!!!

The Japanese police are stupefyingly useless. They seem to have no idea how to gather evidence and make it into a case.
