I would assume that a 17 year old girl has a pretty good idea of what >she is doing. She is old enough to make a decision as an adult.
5000 yen, I don't think she is capable of making a decision as an adult.
She certainly has no idea of the going rate for sex.............probably
the risks either.
It's odd that this thread has turned into a debate about the age of consent and people think that it is OK for a girl at 17 years old to be a prostitute. What a weird world we live in!
Who thought it was OK for a 17 year old girl to be a prostitute?
I've seen some people say she's old enough to understand her actions, but I don't see anyone saying "hey, what's wrong with that"?
The point that is being made is that this guy is being tried for child prostitution when 17 is a child in the legal sense ONLY. A child is, well, a child: pre-pubescent. It seems bizarre to the extreme to call a 17 year old girl...who, for the vast majority of human existence, would be considered well into childbearing years herself...a "child."
Now, of course, society has gotten us to a point where there are definite reasons to be concerned over having sex at that age, but I'm tired of the "pervert" tag. This guy broke the law, he's obviously got moral issues, but he's not a pervert. And "child prostitution" means, to anyone with a brain, "pervert."
she knows exactly what she is doing people. She sell herself for 5,000Y becuase she is going to use her age as a leverage to get more money from her clients after having sex. She can get more that 10x her asking price if she plays her cards right by threathening the "customer" about her age. Problem is the guy did what is right, he did not fall into the trap and decided to have the issue on the open. Don't be fooled. The girl knows she will not be arrested, her identity protected (she is a minor), and there is nothing to prevent her from plying her trade again.

Jav, your speculation sounds plausible. I would add, that she was probably working with some of those guys with the "bad haricuts" and ill fitting suits that these types of girls seem to hang around. One of them probably put her up to it.
I doubt she was in this alone. If anything, the telephone messaging service probably put her into contact with the right people to do such a plan.
Don't get me wrong, this is still terrible on both parts. A grown man paying for sex with a teenage girl, and a teenage girl putting herself out on a service to sell sex.
We here in the reality-based community, on the other hand, think the girl was sufficiently old to be aware of the consequences of her actions -- at least much as any other adult.
What an irony to call this case a "child" prostitution?!! The girl is 17 years old for screws sake! She was able to negotiate a "business" deal for herself, take the money and go to his car to perform "obscene acts" with this unfortunate man who wanted some fun. However, he should have made sure to check her age. 18 or 17 look same by appearance, so why settle with unlawful 17 when he could have taken an 18y old and have equal or better fun...
medievaltimes:Im confused. I thought if a member of the military was held on suspicion of a crime there are supposed to be protests and public outrage. What gives?
I say, that I have to agree with you. The usual protesters are pretty silent on this one.
Only 5000 Yen? And 17 might be legally "child prostitution", but that this not what most of us imagine when we hear the term.
This doesn`t sound like the case the authorities should waste resources on. How about catching some real crooks?

I thought Japanese term " child " was until the age of 21...

5000yen that takes a lot of times before she can buy a Luis Vuiton bag.

What a remarkably silly idea. You would criminalise at a stroke around 15% of Japanese marraiges.

Not deploring the prostitution, the payout, or the actual 'obscene act' just the arrest.
