This kind of story made news in Berlin last week too. Bartender encouraged a 16 year old to down 40+ shots of Tequila; kid died. I used to be a bartender, I've seen some ridiculous stuff; this is completely believable - and tragic.

Most folks don't understand about alcohol poisoning, body weight, metabolism all contribute, just because you can keep drinking right now, doesn't mean you didn't just kill yourself 10 shots ago. Also, most folks don't recognize the signs, just figure they're a bit extra drunk.

He forced him? I'm assuming the victim was pinned down, peg or similar over his nose and the bottle thrust down his throat? Or maybe just told by the suspect he can't hold his ale and pride took centre stage so he drank himself to death.

Even though the legal age of consent is 20 here in Japan, this is more prove of what we Foreigners, already know, that every japanese person is really a kid until they turn 60....

I guess this guy, just couldn't say no....

I have to agree with likeitis, People die all the time form alcohol. But everyone gets upset about canabis. Yeah yeah its illegal, when thinsg that should be arent.

pretty hard to get thru enough sugar salt or cholesterol in 20minutes to kill yoursefl without dying. Those things can only kill you by way of long term accumulation. Overdose is overdose. Can't overdose on certain things. Can overdose on alcohol. I like a drink myself, but I have never had alcohol poisoning. Maybe its because I can see it as a drug, much more dangerous than Marihuana, which if not respected can at the least make you puke your ring out. Everything has its dangers, but our legal definitions are a little skewed. Thinking "Its only alcohol, it can't hurt ya", is the mistake. Its a drug more so than other things, and this poor lad died of it, by being coerced into overdose. It may not have been so easy if attitudes towards alcohol were a bit more realistic.

I worked in a host club for a month a few years ago. The forcing is a group of about 20 guys all cheering you on while you drink, holding the bottle for you, and catching any spillage with a cloth. Mind you, we didn't drink sho-chu, we had team races with champage poured into pitchers.

This is similar to hazing deaths at fraternities. Nobody's sticking a gun to your head, but if you die from overdrinking the people who made you are sometimes liable. Really no different no matter where in the world you're from.

And if he did try to stop him from booze, than fight will fire out and owner will still be charged. Guy want to booze so let him pay for it. Anyone that is attached to alcohol is crass and let drink until they drop. The way I see is that host has no protection from law. Host should call police, perhaps he was scare that they will lock him up instead of boozer.

Not to condone what happened, but a woman was given a suspended sentence for stabbing people in Hiratsuka, a man is given jail time for goading others to drink irresponsibly. I am afraid all I can see in inconsistency.

so this guy dies from sochu over dose and the students smokin pot were alive and well and getting good grades, hmmmmmmmm now tell me which is the harmful drug.ive never heard of anyone overdosing on pot.im not saying you should smoke weed, but give the students a chance, dont mess their lives up over a plant.

The story is not clear. How did he "force" the guy to drink all that shochu? Did he put a gun to his head? Otherwise, how do you "force" someone to drink?
