NAGOYA —
Regional coast guard officials in central Japan searched Nippon Steel Corp.‘s Nagoya works on allegations of leakage of high-density alkaline water into Nagoya port waters.
The raid came after tests on materials found on Jan. 18 in cracks at the steel works’ embankment detected alkaline that far exceeds the safety levels set under the water pollution prevention law, the officials said, adding no environmental damage has been reported. Aichi prefectural government officials said it is possible that the materials in question leaked into the sea through the cracks after a chemical reaction occurred between iron slugs and underground water.
