I wonder if i rang someone in English, telling them its me, would they be stupid enough to transfer money to me? Idiots!!

"Hello, this is your long lost American relative relative. The recent financial crisis has affected me badly. Send money now!"

I like cardboard cut-out of an authority figure that some banks put in their ATM foyers. Very effective.

I think these financial institutions just need to hire a retired oji-san on minimum wage, give him a vinyl armband and a heightened sense of authority, and let him tut tut and wrestle the keitais out of every customer's hand.

    Dame da!!!

There was a fake IRS scam at my Japanese company here in Sapporo.

A fax from "David Smith" of the "IRS" came to a foreign national at the company, asking that the national file certain financial documents, including bank information. The IRS never sends faxes, so we knew it was a scam. The generic name of the send was also a tipoff. We weren't sure how the scammer knew that the company had foreign staff and knew the fax number of the company. Maybe from the company website.

    Watch out for this one.

As MacAthur said, a nation of 12 year olds. Because of it I have to put up the the J-cops driving up and down my street with their loud speaker blaring out stupid messages all day.

I agree with the comments stated above BUT bobcatfish, I'd appreciate it if you could cite your source for MacArthur saying "a nation of 12 year olds," or anything SIMILAR in ANY statement, speech, etc.

    I don't think it happened.

Certainly is good result, but not good enough for public and bank customers. Banks are making enough money on people and they should ugrade their security to protect both sides. Scumbags that are nabbed for such crimes, are sure teling to police how they do their job, and police should use this as a weapon to fight the crime, to educate and inform public via 'MEDIA' daily.

Heard about one story where a woman was called and when the guy said "Ore, Ore!" she hung up and explained later that her son was gay and would never use the word "Ore."

  • bobcatfish at 03:44 PM JST - 11th October

TellMeMoe - do you mean you have never heard of it or never believed he actually said it?

  • gogogo at 10:24 PM JST - 11th October

Why can't they shut down or catch these people they have all these police at the ATM's but I never read a headline about anyone getting caught.

Really? I hear Japanese girls call each other "ore", so why not gays?

A typical case of bank-transfer fraud using ATM is an ‘‘It’s me’’ scam, in which a person posing as a relative of the potential victim asks him or her on the phone to remit money, saying it is necessary to get out of trouble

I triple promise that it is a relative scamming their Grandparent.

What amazes me is the number of people who are apparently so willing to believe that their offspring/grandoffspring have incurred huge gambling debts/p'd off the yakuza/embezzled company funds/got someone else's wife or underage daughter pregnant/smashed the car up while driving without insurance.

  • TellMeMoe at 01:57 PM JST - 12th October

bobcatfish: I mean both. I've never heard or read that he said that.
