How's this for a punishment for male offenders.
Hang them. But I am against capital punishment, so they should be hanged by their genitals.
Or is that a waste of our health insurance?

because
I have google set on "safe search." The internet is proliferated with this these horrors. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the day when child-pornography, including junior idols, is illegal, but given the current state of the internet, an innocent google search could send anyone to jail if such a law is enacted.

218 my foot, that is the tip of the iceberg. In the states it's claimed that 1 in 10 girls is sexually abused which means 10%. Now I don't know how many abusers document their activity and put it on the net but we're talking about probably 10s of thousands of cases not 218.

moonbeams: you are correct about the problem of un-intentionally landing on a site that would be illegal. Even adult porn is a problem if children can accidently access it (I'm always in the room if my kids are on the net). I'm not sure what the answer is but I'm a lot more comfortable with going after the abusers and the distributors than just randomly searching people's IP activity. I think that was where you were headed, correct me if I'm wrong.

The problem is that, say you want to get rid of a political opponent, a simple consfication of their hard drive and you might get lucky.

Too many sick and twisted souls here in Japan. If I ever get my hands on these scum who try to make money from poor innocent children!

Bikini DVDs and dodgy Anime should be banned.
medievaltimes at 10:14 AM JST - 7th August
Ahhh...because why? Meaning, what is the rationale for not having a law of that type put in place?
pawatan at 10:30 AM JST - 7th August
Buying, selling, uploading, downloading, and creating the stuff is all illegal. Perhaps the lawmakers thought all bases were covered?

More quality Japan bashing, I am offended at these harsh words against my country. I admit there is a lot of perverts in Japan but Europe and America have their share of them as well. My question is what is considered to be "child porn". In America they are prosecuting teens for taking pictures of themselves and labeling them as sexual offenders for the rest of their lives. "child porn" is becoming a catch phrase and the attempt to stamp it out is causing witch hunts in the community. These hunts are far more damaging that the crime as it fosters mistrust in people. Again what is considered to be "child porn" and why is the west attempting to push its Victorian values on Japan. "Child Porn" is an internal matter that is up to Japan to make laws governing the definition and punishment. I am against these sick perverts and yes they should be punished. The guilty need to be punished but again should all cases be punished the same the stuff showing sex with minors to the innocent pictures?

Unfortunately there is quite a lot of Japan bashing on the forums. Some countries say having a photo of your own child at bathtime is illegal, some say photographing a nursing baby is illegal. I don't see other countries and people chastising those policies. I agree it's an internal affair.
DenDon at 03:33 AM JST - 8th August
child porn is material showing sexual interaction with children. Japan makes a lot of it. if YOUR parlaiment are debating the subject, and YOUR police agency are reporting record increases in offences then yes it is an internal affair, you are quite right. cover your ears and shut out those tutting foreigners.
yuriotanifan you are as the mod says 'off topic'. please refer to Japan, not America bubble bath. victorian values? eh? what? may I quote you?
knucle down then buster. it's your responsibility, get busy.

"Uh-oh... Nigelboy's going to have a tough time refuting this one.
I've been saying again and again, as these cases jump from not so frequent to almost daily, that the laws are too lax, the punishment nearly non-existent, and that Japan is behind the times in terms of laws, and yet all you hear from people like mentioned above is that it happens in other countries, too"
Sorry for the late response.
And to respond to your post, I'm not saying that it JUST happens to other countries. I'm saying that it HAPPENS MORE FREQUENTLY in other countries despite the tougher laws in place for those countries.
Moderator: References to other countries are not relevant to this discussion. Please keep your comments focused on Japan.
nigelboy at 02:11 PM JST - 9th August
Fair enough but I believe you should still keep the link I referenced to since it does address the counter argument of "Japan failing to create effective countermeasures despite criticism that it proliferates child porn images via the Internet"

To the rescue of what? It has been about 5 days since my post, and not a single source or report supporting your claims has been stated. Japan doesn't seem to be in need for any "rescue".
The next time this topic comes around I will ask for some source of report again, so you better start looking.
