NPD: "See, we're doing something! Honest!" (Pity many of those caught are police officers!)

It's difficult to single out Japan for this as it happens all over the world, unfortunately. But, there is an alarmingly high number of cases in Japan. Just another chapter in the Japanese shame file.

Where are the statistics to back your statement up, Serendipity? The fact is that nobody really knows the size of the problem here in Japan and the figures quoted in the article sound to me remarkably low! I have a friend who is a headmaster of an elementary school in London and he told me at he estimates that probably around 40% of the kids in his school are victims of some sort of abuse, be it physical or psychological, and that as many as 20% of the girls are victims of sexual abuse - and this is an elementary school!!! As I said, there are very few reliable figures out there on the size of the problem in Japan, but I suspect that the problem is worse in many other countries. Mind you, that is not justifying Japan in any way...

Yes, I have to agree! If I remember correctly from an article I read some years ago, its probably because around 88% of (mainly internet) child porn actually originates from Japan.
No wonder the authorities are more anxious than other countries to do something about it - they have to!

Why is it "difficult" to single out Japan? Isn't it still 100% legal to own child pornography in Japan? That is more than likely one reason why it continues to proliferate there.

This nation needs to protect its children, Japan, shame on you for not doing so.

All it takes is several months in Japan and a fairly observant person to realize there is a big facination with young/school girls in this country.
dennis0bauer at 03:14 PM JST - 8th August
Well it is nothing new, more cases because they finally clamp down on it?
medievaltimes: Really? i though all those old japanese guys going with young schoolgirls to karaoke was just a cultural thing :p

Number of child pornography cases (source: ABC news - about two weeks ago):
U.S.: 51% Russia: 20% Japan: 5%
I don't trust the statistics as the kiddie porn sites have an incentive to stay under the radar, but I'd say 5% is still alarming, though. It has to be stopped and I think Google is working on it.
The internet is the problem. As pedophiles get desensitized, the porn has become increasingly brutal. It's scary.

5% of what? world total of child porn ratio? Where is Thailand, Indonesia, India, Africa, etc rank.
seansezso at 10:22 PM JST - 8th August
Wisest statement yet. Would have been wiser for a full stop where I cut it.
Nobody knows much of anything for sure. Anyone who makes extreme statements about Japan for one or two fishy stats on this is insane. Or they desperately need someone to demonize to salve their own...whatever.

Not that I am a great fan of the NPA, but here they obviously right. Before broadband access became available and cheap, the sickos had to communicate by mail, telephone, etc. Now, all the disgusting "content" they want and communication with each other is avaible with a few clicks. The internet has been a godsent for these people, and frankly I don`t see a solution.
skipthesong at 09:02 AM JST - 9th August
actually, I was quite shocked when I learned about Enjo kosai, the sale of undies in vending machines from high school girls, and the soap lands..
I am not against porn, as long as the women are of age, which however, most are not.
There needs to be a very strict punishment for child porn. With the exception of the internet (I'll explain later), if you are caught with photos, magazine, any printed material, you should face a heavy jail term.
seansezso at 02:51 PM JST - 9th August
Did you say most? I think you better make a retraction, sir.
