No. of reported stalking cases hits record high in 2014

8 Comments

The number of reported stalking cases in Japan hit a record high 22,823 in 2014, according to a report released by the National Police Agency this week.

It was the third year in a row that the number has risen, and an increase of 8.2% over 2013, the NPA said, adding that the higher number is most likely due to a greater willingness by victims to report stalking.

Of the total, police issued warnings to stalkers in 3,171 cases, while arrests were made in 2,473 cases, the NPA report said. About 89% of stalking victims were women; men aged from their 20s to late 40s accounted for 65% of stalkers. There were 14 cases in which stalkers killed their victims.

In 51% of all stalking cases, the perpetrators were ex-partners of the persons being victimized, the report said.

I was hoping that was the reason, or at least a major contributor. I'm glad to know people are reporting these creeps in increasing numbers. I hope the police are following up on these reports and giving other victims reason to speak up and not have to live in fear.

I was drunk and don't remember a thing.

I don't want to point out the obvious but have you noticed that the suicide rate has gone down accordingly over the last three years as the stalking cases have gone up and the main reason they're citing is...

In 51% of all stalking cases, the perpetrators were ex-partners of the persons being victimized, the report said.

Does no one see the correlation between the two? It can't be a coincidence. That would be far to convenient to write-off.

This is good news! It doesn't mean that stalking cases have increased. It means that more women are not putting up with it and reporting it to the police.

@Disillusioned Good point!!! Totally agree

@KnowBetter: Cause and correlation. I actually don't see your point. How could they be connected? Are you implying stalkers used to just kill themselves? I don't really see that making any sense.

If you complain about a barking dog and call the police, and then point at the room of the house where the dog is barking from, you are considered a stalker by the dog/house owner and can be arrested. That is sick.

But a small extract:

Humens never seem to learn that the attraction to the opposite gender or other half is deep rooted into the humans body chemistry.

Man is but perverted, Japan is no excuse, "Tomonobu Itagaki" prime example, the boom of hentai comics, the many untold assaults on female colleagues in Japan and around the world. Whan one has a full load, sex is the only thing that comes to mind, it is but a flaw in the creation, an set of measures to keep the race from extinction if you will.
