Police have arrested a 23-year-old male employee of a nursing home in Osaka on a charge of attempted murder after he choked a 97-year-old woman staying at the facility.

According to police, the incident occurred at the Sanrakuen home in Sumiyoshi Ward at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Fuji TV reported. The suspect, Shogo Kano, is accused of choking the woman with both hands as she slept in her room. After he left, another employee came into the room and noticed something amiss with the woman and called 119.

Police said the woman was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Kano was quoted by police as saying he was worn out from caring for the elderly residents.

A different guy choking residents at a different nursing home in Osaka? Some 34 year old was recently arrested for doing the same thing. I'm sure he WAS worn out, but that's not an excuse. Speaking from experience, the management likely hired a bare-minimum number of staffers in order to keep profits up. That decreases the level of individual care, and increases stress on workers.

if a person can not handle the stress, quit the job instead of killing. any facility not have enough manpower to take care the elderly, should be closed out for business. government need to step in and set up regulations.

The irony there, bet this old woman's own grown-up adult children were worn out too. That's why she ended up there. As for this Kano guy, give him concrete shoes and throw him off a bridge.

Staff choking elderly residents, staff hitting elderly residents, elderly resident going over balconies that clearly are impossible to go over unless "helped"....

That this is story appears on the same day as JT has a story on the increasing number of elderly people may be coincidental. In fact, the linkage is clear. As Japan's population ages, more will end up in residences for the elderly. As this population increases, the costs to the government and to society will increase. As it increases, steps will be taken to control costs. As steps are taken to control costs, personnel/labor costs will come under pressure. As labor costs come under pressure, the likelihood of paying less and hiring less qualified staff increases.

Result? This unfortunately will not get better in the coming years and I am afraid we will see more of these cases.

Errrrr NO wc626!. She is there because she is 97 and and cannot live in a "normal" home. I sincerely hope you do not have the misfortune to be dependent on your fmaily caring for you with an attitude like that!

@triumph I don't get what part was offensive to you . I think you must have read that wrong . saying her family was worn out from caring for her doesn't mean that wc626 agrees with not caring for elderly family , that's why he wrote " ironically " .

Japan is known all over the world for the respect it shows to it's elderly citizens, but maybe we should all tell the truth... that Japan is "worn out from caring for the elderly residents"

This will continue to fluctuate as the elderly increase and ratio of caregivers decreases

I have a work experience as a helper in one of the home for the elderly citizens, I've noticed that many of the caregivers works only for the sake of money. For example caregiver A was assigned to take obachan x - A case like obachan x have to wait or endure 1 hour or more with poof inside her pumper, since the one assigned to give care is coming late nobody pay attention to obachan x even though other care giver who were around are available to give the service that obachan x need, It seems that their is a need to improve system and policies to avoid circumstances like, and at the same avoid corruptions of caregivers mindset and heart into some degree ha ha!...
