The center detected 1,609 child porn sites last year, based mainly on tip-offs, and urged the taking down of 526 whose servers are located in Japan. However, only 339 accepted the request
I don't get this. They tell the owners of the servers (or owners of the sites?) to take down the pages containing child porn, they say no, and that's the best the National Police Agency can do??
It may not be illegal to own child porn here, but it is certainly against the law to distribute it, which is what any internet site is doing. Why aren't these people arrested???
If the sites are hosted in lawless countries and the domain names registered under a company registered in that country then little can be done to shut them down. what the government should do is get NTT to block access to such sites.
True, and that is probably what accounts for 1000 or so of the sites cited above. But in this case it says 526 of the servers are known to be in Japan. So surely the police can do something other than just "request" that they don't post kiddie porn.
Copy these sites, analyze them, try and identify the kids in them and then prosecute everybody involved. This includes those companies whose servers are hosting this filth. Moreover, if there are no statutes on the books, just make something up as you go along.
i just knew that child porn is illegal here!
why i can see street vender in akihabara sell those cd almost every single time i went there?! it is right there on the street during the weekend!!
I don't know why it takes so long to take these sites down.
I have 17 websites and lost one last year for 'inappropriate content' due to a bad link.
If my hosting provider can cut off just one of my sites without question, why then, are these sick sites still allowed to exist? Methinks because someone is making money out of hosting them and is ignoring the situation!!
Nicole77...I agree...this issue is so much bigger than the abduction issues! And NO, I'm NOT being sarcastic...I am being deadly serious! We need to concentrate on what is happening TODAY...NOT years ago!!

Then if you see him there with this filth...why aren't you being more of a man and kicking the crap out of his market stall?

Don`t forget this is Japan, the world of legal child pornography. Why did they refuse and are not arrested? Well, think who is behind this and everything will be clear.

Papa,
Yeah. they should have done more like waterboarding the people who purchased the material until they gave up the names of the suppliers.

This is a joke. This is the best the J-government can do?
Anybody who has lived in Japan for more than six months understands well the Japanese male fascination with underage girls.
