Osaka man stabbed after argument over boiling crabs leads to bizarre attempted murder

A basement level restaurant in the bustling Dotombori area of Osaka became the scene of a grizzly stabbing on March 29, when a part-time cook stabbed his co-worker over an altercation while boiling crabs.

The suspect’s remark of “I don’t get why I’m under arrest” to police as his fellow cook was rushed to hospital for a lacerated abdomen has led readers to call for immigration reforms. Others worried that this and events like this are contributing to more ultra-right-wing sentiment in the land.

At around 2 p.m. in Kani Doraku, the suspect, 24-year-old Chinese national Gao Shuang, was preparing food. According to a statement he made during interrogation, he “was just helping boil crabs. Then [the victim] started complaining, it grew into an argument.” There were about 10 people on the scene at the time who confirmed that a heated argument was going on.

The 27-year-old victim will require one month to recover, but it is said that his injuries are not life threatening. Upon hearing the news, Internet commenters reacted largely to the man’s comment of “I don’t get why I’m under arrest.”

Some saw it as a comment of arrogance on the part of the suspect.

With conflicting reports such as Asahi Shimbun quoting the suspect as saying “I don’t remember injuring anyone," others took the opposite route and suspected Gao might be getting railroaded by the system. “Actually,” wrote one reader “these kinds of cases get handled like a rag, where there has been talk of a person from China working for next to nothing stabbing his boss. However, without knowing anyone’s background it’d be foolish to judge.”

Other theories came up as well such as temporary insanity, causing the suspect not to remember what had just happened. Nevertheless, it’s impossible to tell until more facts come to light. It certainly does seem strange for a third year university student to throw his life and possibly another’s away over a pot of crabs.

I feel like this story missed out on an opportunity for some great puns. I think it's too early in the game to speculate if it was accidental, on purpose or if, like mentioned in the article, it was a case of temporary insanity.

Somebody was being crabby that day.

glad he was pinched before he could hurt anyone else.

So the argument had witnesses. Did the actual stabbing? If not, there are many possibilities including an accident. Like you are gesticulating with a knife in your hand and your partner in yelling lunges at you.

There is also the possibility that drama queen Japanese man stabs himself and blames the Chinese guy. Not saying all or even many Japanese are that crazy and dramatic, but I have met my fair share.

The gaijins get it in the neck again because of one nutter!

I can't believe people are getting racist over this. So much for guilty until proven innocent. Like others said, it could have been an accident as people working in a kitchen are often holding knives. But I will have faith those calling for immigration reform are a small fringe minority.

The main problem to most posters is the guy's nationality. They don't really care about the circumstances.

The cops got him in a pincer movement.

Too many crab puns.

Sometime back here in Singapore we had this one Chinese national killed his girl friend, her room mate and tried killing her daughter (who lost her finger when he was trying to slash her). Later he tried packing his bag but get caught just before leaving home and then he told police he didn't remember doing anything but everything is blur. This is not the only case but we are get a lot of cases where Chinese national are killing local or their own country men/women and try to show they are innocent (in-fact we have crime rate going up since more and more China Chinese are coming to this country). I am not sure if this is culture in China to go and killing around?

What's wrong with a crab pun? This whole incident is bizarre, and luckily no-one got killed.

Geez, some people need to come out of their shell.

How long had the complaints been continuing? Was the stabber a victim of ijime?
