At least the older ones who don't wear gray hats.

They should look also for a temp-worker...

as I said.. it will be quite a big criminal year in harsh times.

That's Osaka for you.

Poor guy, my heart to his family.

I just want to know what TYPE of knife? I feel bad for the guy, I really do, but wasn't there a ban on dangerous knives brought about because of this very type of thing?
Again... it's the mental issue that needs addressed. Life is not a game, there are serious consequences to just assuming that you are safe. How much for a taxi co. to install a barrier for protection?
3 times in a week is utter b/s.

JT can print as much as they want about 'Taxi derivers' and no one is doing anything about to secure these poor drivers, which are earning them bread and butter day and night. Do robbers understand that this is their living for food of their families and education for their children? What are the lawmakers saying about that? Perhaps nothing just seating behind their desks and waiting to hear who will be attacked robbed or killed the next. It looks that 2009 is a year for Japanese ‘taxi drivers.'

"...prompting the police to consider possible connections."
Geez, you think? Even if there are no connections, you're damn right it should be checked out. I can just see the police sighing and cursing the criminal merely for making them do more work.
I agree with a poster above; while it's nice to have a taxi without the glass shield between driver/customer, it's time to modernize and at the very least install small cameras.

Oh no! What if this robber is smart enough to change his hat?
PaizuriSan at 09:59 PM JST - 5th January
That was brilliant BTW

"Oh no! What if this robber is smart enough to change his hat?"
Funnily, it's unlikely.

I heard that Japansse taxi companies now are thinking about protection shield between front seat and back. It seems that their bosses don't like it and drivers want it if possible. I don't know why? I don't think that security camera set in cab prevents crimes.
norinrad21 at 10:37 PM JST - 5th January
in most parts of the world, taxi cabs have small cams in them to keep away trouble makers
usaexpat at 12:01 AM JST - 6th January
In a country where it has always been pretty safe to be a cabbie this is becoming a disturbing trend.

Unfortunately this happens a lot in the states, the only thing that prevents this thing is a divider window.preferably bullet resistant as well
