Overall crime figures down again this year: NPA
The National Police Agency says that the number of confirmed crimes resulting in conviction recorded between January and November this year is again lower than last year. Police say that if the trend continues, Japan’s crime figures are expected to fall to around half of the all-time high recorded 10 years ago.
The NPA says 2002 was the worst year on record for crime statistics with a total of 2.85 million confirmed offenses. The agency added that 2012 currently stands at 1.28 million cases.
On the other hand, the statistics showed an escalation in cases of assault and threats, NTV reported. Crimes perpetrated against family members, including domestic violence, rose this year. Cases of coercement to commit an obscenity, a crime which often involves the statutory rape or abuse of underage girls, surged this year, said police. The statistics also showed an increase in such cases involving girls under the age of 13.
