This is nothing new as it happens all over the world in countries where there are people wanting to immigrate, and there are usually tough immigration laws and policies. But I have to admit that's a great name;
"Hallelujah marriage agency".
How did they 'make' the public officials do something illegal? Bribery? Force? Ask?
rjd-jr,
the couples probably don't spend any time with each other; they might not even know each other's names. In some parts of the world it's called illegal immigration, something you have previously posted as being against.
I don't think they call these kinds of things 'illegal immigration,' they call them bogus marriages or something. Regardless, these are ethnic Koreans and in these cases they deserve a break if they want to stay long term in Japan, even I sometimes can make exceptions.

I'm pretty certain this common practice is called illegal immigration.
Here in the US when there is an applicant for Permanent Residency based
on marriage to a US citizen, there is a pretty serious interview involving questions that only a couple residing together could answer.
If suspicion still exists, they will send investigators to your "marital residence" and interview your neighbors. I'm sure this is pretty common
in most developed wealthy countries that has lots of immigrants lining up.
This is all very christian. Seriously, I would like to know how the police are going to go about proving this little scheme. I would also like to know what the privacy issues are in al of this.

So Koreans can live illegally in Japan, but Mexicans, for instance, should just stay home?
what is a fake marriage? plenty. marrying for money, a passport - i.e.
citizenship, just for play, or again, just for money. there's
a true word for this, it's called divorce.
Why choose Japan? Weird. I heard there's been a crackdown on prostitution (forgive the pun) in South Korea so maybe she was moving to greener pastures, but I've also heard that the most popular destination for SK working girls is Australia. It's pretty popular with Japanese girls too.

That's mighty kind of you, rjd, to make exceptions. I'm sure they appreciate your saying so, even though you neither live here nor work for the Jp government.
my first marriage was bogus no matter how legit it seemed at the time. no koreans were involved until my divorce, and she is spectacular. however, forcing a confession for every suspected bogus marriage over the last few years from a couple of people is just as bogus as the fake marriages. J-cops are lazy and cheats.
COP. so you have been the masterming behind every crime in Osaka dating back 20 years.
Fallon. I only came to Japan 3 years ago.
Cop. Wow, your crime ring is so sophisticated that you ran it from abroad? you are going down!
Fallon. I can admit to the charge you picked me up for but why should I admit to things I have no idea about?
Cop. lets see how 28 days of no food or sleep change you attitude...
