Partially skeletonized human body found near Arakawa River in Tokyo

A partially skeletonized female body was discovered on the bank of the Arakawa River on Sunday, police said Monday.

According to police, the body was found at around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday by a father and child who had gone catching grasshoppers near the river, Fuji TV reported. The body is presumed to belong to an adult female, with a height of 167 cm. She was wearing a red and white sweater and pants, but had no shoes on, police said.

The body was partially skeletonized in the head and legs, and was beginning to decompose, investigators said. Police are currently trying to identify the body.

Scary. I thought this was just a follow up to the story the other day but apparently it's just the season for finding decomposed human remains in water :

Scary, I was never living in a country with such a high crime rate before. Even my wallet got stolen in Japan.

Really? You must be Singaporean then (which I believe is the only country that has a lower crime rate than Japan)

7 ( +15 / -8 )

Japan is the 6th-lowest for crime on this list

http://www.elist10.com/top-10-countries-lowest-recorded-crime-rate/

Maybe it's lower for violent crime.

That kid will have some story for school.

Curious though, I wonder how many crimes go unreported in Japan...

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Is catching grasshoppers a thing in Japan?

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

@wakarimasen. I think it's a THING with kids worldwide ... or at least catching other small creatures. Anyway, what a horrible day out for the father and child.

It's too soon to tell whether this person was a victim of a crime.

But this is the comments section of Japan Today!

That comment is in contender for the best comment this week!

Indeed.

@Strangerland

"Really? You must be Singaporean then (which I believe is the only country that has a lower crime rate than Japan)"

Lower REPORTED crime rate.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Lower REPORTED crime rate.

Sure. If you want to go off actual crime rates, then Japan is the safest country in the world.

Come on, prove me wrong with made up numbers.

Sure. If you want to go off actual crime rates, then Japan is the safest country in the world.

Because Japan is the only country that fabricates crime rates?

Because Japan is the only country that fabricates crime rates?

No, because every country only goes off reported crime rates. No one anywhere knows the real crime rates for any country, because not all crime is reported.

Therefore the only realistic point of comparison is reported crime rates, since those are the only numbers we can know anywhere.

Unless you think they are fabricating crime rates, in which case we need some sort of proof of that.

I think I misunderstood your comment. We seem to be on the same page.

Pretty sure if you're seeing bone tthe decomposition process started a long time ago.

There is the possibility.... especially since the body is already partially skeletonized, that the body may have been moved there well after she died. About Japan's crime rate and unreported crimes. From 2008 to 2012 it was found that in Osaka 81,000 crimes went unreported by the police. They wanted to have Osaka crime statistics make the city look safer than it really is. Basically they did not report the crimes to the NPA, National Police Agency.

"it's just the season for finding decomposed human remains in water"

Yes. I just watched another story on the news about a woman in a canal. So that is one in a POND, one in a RIVER and now one in a CANAL.

And it's only Monday!!

They wanted to have Osaka crime statistics make the city look safer than it really is.

A certain number of posters still bash a particular prefecture.

Ghost rider:

" I was never living in a country with such a high crime rate before. Even my wallet got stolen in Japan. "

Then you have been living a truly blessed life. In what wondrous places did you live before?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

@keika1628... what is the opposite of bashing.... fabricating data to make things appear better than the truth. The Osaka Police Department admitted to with holding actual crime statistics.... they did not report 81,000 incidents over a 5 year period. If you think my bringing up the facts is bashing.... then you are the type that prefers lies over the ugly truth. Sweeping the dirt under the tatami does not make it go away.

Godfather:

" Yes. I just watched another story on the news about a woman in a canal. So that is one in a POND, one in a RIVER and now one in a CANAL.

....and its a country of 120 million people, and every single find of a body makes the news. Because it is news here. Can you say the same about whatever country you come from?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@willib..... its news in every state in the U.S., and I'd bet it would be news in every country in Europe. It would not make U.S. National News... its gotta be big to do that. Also... with commercials.... U.S. National News is only around 21 minutes a night.... would have to be a slow, slow news day to make it.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

"every single find of a body makes the news"

No, they do not. The SUICIDE RATE in Japan is TWENTY-FIVE times the MURDER RATE. Most bodies found are SUICIDES and there are just too many to make the national news.

The posters highlighting the chronic under-reporting situation in Osaka are telling the ugly truth about Japan. It is definitely not safe.

But it is a law-abiding country with a low crime-rate!!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Bottom line.... even with the "un-reported", crime, if you somehow figure what we don't know in, Japan, yes, is still a very safe place. Agree whole-heartedly, But that said.... why try to paint it as being super, super safe. Japan's propensity to constantly extol their virtues but hide their imperfections can be exasperating. I'm from the U.S., and as much as I think there is a lot of good things.... I'm very critical of all the bad.... and there is a lot. A true patriot admits the ills of his country and try to fix them.

5 ( +4 / -0 )

I think the crime reports in Japan is fudged to make people think they have a low crime rate. Every day I read of at least three murders and they still have a low murder rate!! I DON"T THINK SO!!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I think Japan is safe, but I and my friends were victims of numerous petty crimes. Stolen bicycles, stolen underwear, groping, stalking,, burgulary of more knickers, trespass and a terrible assault on a female. Of course, when the assault was reported, the police blamed the victim. Never that many incidents happen in my home country.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

How about the large number of missing people in Japan? That number is rather large, these unsolved crimes would suggest that Japan is less safe than official crime statistics suggest.....

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@keika1628... what is the opposite of bashing

Try keep up with what is trending in the crime comments, I wasn't having a go at your post .

I think I misunderstood your comment. We seem to be on the same page.

I misunderstood yours too, so we are on the same page in more ways than one!

It is definitely not safe.

You know, other than it is.

The Osaka Police Department

And you know that the practice was not just limited to Osaka. Everything that is done in Japan is done with a nod from above.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It:s kind of scary seeing all these reports of human bodies being found recently. It seems that when one crime of sorts is found, so many more surfaces at around the same time.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Japan is the 6th-lowest for crime on this list http://www.elist10.com/top-10-countries-lowest-recorded-crime-rate/

Aside from Japan which has a population of over 120M people, all of the countries on that list have less than 10M people with Iceland under 1M.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Which gives an indication of just how fake the Japanese crime statistics must be.

If they were faked, you can be sure there would be much more evidence of crime and dysfunctional behavior but there isnt.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I laughed out loud when I read this...

Do you even live in Japan, and If so, why are you here if it's so bad?

No one is forcing you to stay unless youre US military personnel.
