Police in Osaka's Yodogawa Ward have arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of murder after the minivan he was driving hit a taxi while he was being chased by a police patrol car. The driver of the taxi was killed in the incident, Fuji TV reported.
According to police, the chase started at around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday. The police patrol car approached the minivan being driven by Kunihiro Matsuiwa, a restaurant manager from Toyonaka city. Police said the minivan was moving in an erratic manner.
However, Matsuiwa sped off, leading police on a chase. He went through a red light and hit the taxi at an intersection, abandoned his vehicle about one kilometer away and then fled on foot.
The 68-year-old driver of the taxi, Haruyoshi Onishi, suffered severe injuries in the collision. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Matsuiwa turned himself at a police station on Thursday afternoon. He was quoted as saying that he panicked when he heard the siren and took off. He said he left the scene of the collision because he was afraid he would be arrested.

The world should have no space for cowardly acts like this. Shame on you Kunihiro Matsuiwa.

Should have simply faced the music when he heard the siren. Now he's going away for crimes resulting in death, to boot.

Cowardly, vile, homicidal behaviour beneath contempt, but murder...?
