Probably not a crime, but EVERYBODY involved needs some serious psycholgical treatment. Cook: "Oh yes, I would like to have my genitals removed and cook them to make some artistic/political/existential point." "Patrons": "Oh yes, we would like to pay money to eat your genitals." Me: "You people are all BAT-S#%T CRAZY!"

I have lived here for 17 of the last 22 years and I can say with certainty that this country just gets weirder and weirder.

Seriously though, the doctor that agreed to surgically remove a perfectly healthy body part needs to have his/her medical license revoked.

Well if they can't find a reason to lock up Issei Sagawa, I doubt this investigation is going to get anywhere. Still, I would rather they review his case than waste time with this one.

Sugiyama, a painter in his 20s who defines himself as “asexual,” did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I'm sick and tired of hearing this mis-translation. The painter in question identifies a sexless/genderless. In the western world, the word "asexual" actually means "nonsexual". As in asexual reproduction of primitive lifeforms, and also an asexual person who seeks a similar partner who would prefer a romantic relationship without sex (yes, they exist, at a ratio of about 5 women to one guy, totaling about 1% of the population)

Sorry about my language rant, but that's some cheap and irresponsible journalism. The Ace community wasn't happy to be "represented" by that guy.

  • 3

    Probie

    I hope they arrest him.

Calling it "art" is an insult to real art.

If I whipped my cock out in the middle of the street, I'd be arrested, calling it an "art statement" wouldn't change anything. I'd still be arrested.

Thinking you can get away with it because they were cut off, and a few pretentious people paid money to eat it, is asinine.

In an email to AFP in May, he confirmed the event had taken place and said it was organized to raise awareness about “sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people.”

No it wasn't. It was about HIM. A nobody "artist" craving attention.

A quick search of the AVEN forums yields this:

    Yume, Posted 27 May 2012 - 03:35 AM

...That's kind of gross. I didn't know cannibalism wasn't illegal in Japan.

Anyway, I'd be curious to see the article in Japanese though. I think this whole sex-vs-gender confusion probably comes from the translation. As far as I know (-> as my dictionary tells me), the same word is used for sex and gender in Japanese. Also, a quick search on wikipedia tells me that there is a difference between 非性愛(hiseiai)/"nonsexuality" (defined as the lack of sexual attraction but not of romantic attraction) and 無性愛(museiai)/"asexuality" (defined as the lack of both romantic and sexual attraction), and the English term "asexuality" refers more to the "nonsexuality" term the Japanese language uses. I'll add that "musei" means "asexual" like in "asexual reproduction", and if you take the kanji literally, it's 無=nothing + 性=sex(or gender since the same word is used for both) -> literally "no sex/gender". Also none of my Japanese dictionaries have any definition for "asexual" except for the "asexual reproduction" one (then again, the same could be said about most French dictionaries). So yeah, it's very, very complicated and confusing, and asexuality being unknown as it is, it's no wonder the translator mixed up.

They have no reason or right to arrest or even investigate him. He did everything by the book. If they want to change the laws, let them do so properly - you can't just make something a crime because you don't approve of it.

And if they are going to find fault, they should start with the surgeon.

@REMzz, great observation about this English translation or mistranslation, because I to was thinking, asexual?? That would be about half of all the youn Japnese kids who prefer to fall in love with a virtual partner than actually meet real people and heaven forbid actually have SEX?? But the person in this news suffers from a condition where the sexual organs are all messed up and they neither have a real penis nor a real vagina, right???

Aren't doctors bound by the hippocratic oath not to do any harm to the human body.

Who performed this unnecessary medical procedure.

If I walk into a hospital and ask them to cut off my left arm because I don't need it anymore are the doctors going to comply with my wishes?

Of course if the genitals are infected then they should be removed if there's a legitimate medical cause. But removing a body part out of personal preference should not be a sanctioned procedure.

The doctor who cut it off should lose his license.

His anatomy was very average and quite normal. He just didn't want to have anything there, and dreams of wearing transparent clothes with no undergarments. This was from the CalorieLab article that got taken down sometime between now and when it was published in May. I doubt i have a backup copy of it, since i usually don't save "odd news" like that.

    @NeverSubmit,

I would think he went through the proper system for legitimate transexuals (male to female), since he admitted that he takes female hormones, but wears a "corset" to suppress breast development. At the last minute he most likely told the surgeon that he didn't want "sexual reassignment" done, but opted to simply remove everything.

No surgeon would do anything with healthy organs without a letter from the psychiatrist stating that the guy seeks to become a woman. The risk of losing one's license or worse yet end up in prison is too much. The only other option is that he went to Thailand and told a surgeon there that he is a ladyboy who is afraid of turning into a burly balding old man, and paid cash right there for the operation.

I'm not an expert in these things, but i'm well aware of how cautious the medical establishment is, regarding doing everything by the book and not risking any legal trouble, whether it's an appendectomy or a nosejob...

  • 4

    FightingViking

removing a body part out of personal preference should not be a sanctioned procedure.

Another way of looking at it is : if the doctor had refused, he might have done a DIY job... Around the same time, the police were investigating a dead man with his family jewels under his bed and they were wondering if it was a suicide. If the "artist" is mentally unstable we all know he isn't going to get very much help in Japan.

It's a little late to investigate now, isn't it? The person in question was very public about what he was about to do, and if an investigation was necessary, this should have happened before the event. Plus, some of the evidence is now missing, so to speak.

This is as stupid as stupid can get and needs to be made fun of. I see no sense in serving your goods up on a platter to promote more understanding of asexual issues and feel revolted by it. Anyone who is asexual should be offended. There are so many other better ways to do this then to gross everyone out like this. But he does not have genitals like a woman. Is there a tube? I cannot see how a doctor would perform this procedure on an otherwise healthy individual.

I would assume it's done the same way as "sexual reassignment surgery" for a transexual, but without creating a "pouch" that coordinates with female anatomy. The male urethra is a few inches longer than the female, so, i would presume they just reattached what's left when they stitched him closed. I'm not a surgeon, but there's only so many ways to do it. He would have had to use a catheter tube for at least 3 weeks afterwards.

Healthy? Physically maybe, but not mentally.

    jumpultimatestarsJUN. 27, 2012 - 09:36AM JST

@REMzzz A) how do you know that he didn't mean "asexual" as defined by you? That's what I assumed he meant way back in the first article months ago. not attracted to either gender... B) Your link doesn't work. Perhaps you have to be a member.

A? It's simple. if 70+ million people, 1% of the world population were this way, we would hear about it more. The average Ace doesn't suffer from body dysmorphia (a psychiatric condition). Most of them have normal romantic relationships if they can find another Ace partner. They kiss and cuddle in bed, but when it comes to sexual attraction, they just don't have it. An overactive libido is dealt with in private, since their sexuality is not linked to people, things or animals. It's in freefall, so to speak, and they don't get aroused by seeing their love naked. This guy most likely just had a phobia of his privates, but was enough of an exhibitionist to cook and display them.

B? The link is dead. It's gone. Because it had a snapshot of his twitter feed, a scan of the invitation cards and photos of the party. He/it called them up and told them to take down the story. So there was no sense for me to make it clickable.

anyone have a picture of this creature?

@takachan, I can google but i'd rather not. He is kind of plain looking, black hair and stretched ears. In the photo where he was serving food, he looked glazed over with sweat, as if he had malaria or something. Not sure what that's from... Menopausal hotflashes?

how do you know that he didn't mean "asexual" as defined by you?

If he did mean that and wanted everyone to associate asexuality with pan fried privates, then he deserves all the foul humor he can stomach, and much much more.

People already view asexuality as pathological, since they can't imagine not being sexually attracted (but we all were "asexual" as children... love was brotherly and romantic, until puberty, when a different facet of life suddenly appeared)

Asexuality is like bisexuality, a natural variation of the human mind. It's not an illness, and doesn't require medication or surgery. It requires simple understanding, like left-handedness. Live and let live.

This guy made it sound like all asexuals have a perverted fantasy and some sort of a sexual hangup. A real disservice to everyone affected.

If they get him. It will probably be something like indecent exposure. Which I could possibly see being a loop hole in the "artist's" plan.

  • 0

    Vesperto

Is this for real? Kinda adds a notch to my weird scale.

Cannibalism tends to be a crime because it usually comes right after murder, has anyone looked these laws up?

Indecent exposure? It's Japan, no one cares, or they care way too much. I doubt there's such a concept. Then again...

If all the people involved are consenting adults and mentally sane - i sorta doubt it -, then who cares? So they want to eat each other's parts. Fine. Kill each other for all i care, so long as everyone agrees. Live and let live... or die, whatever.

I don't see how this could help any sexually atypical group.

It most likely used sex-change and cosmetic surgery loopholes. Or Thailand as was already suggested. Any details?

If they did, the prison population would increase by about 100 million.

Won't be the first or last time this has happened. Japanese hidden history is full of eating body parts of the enemy.

My goodness, Tom, you certainly do keep hinting that you want to discuss the hidden history of Japanese cannibalism. In this case, though, nobody has been completely eaten...just nibbled at. It wasn't an enemy, and nobody died, though the customers probably wish they had ordered the chicken.

Does anyone find it funny that this story was in the "What's Hot" section of JT?

I like how they're trying to reverse engineer some illegality because it makes them uncomfortable.

The fact is that nobody was in danger. If you want to make it illegal from now on, please outline the ethics for outlawing it, and prosecute all further offenders. But let's not get all arrest-y because our delicate sensibilities were offended.
