Police officer arrested for having altered model gun

A police officer was arrested on Wednesday for carrying a model gun that was determined to have the ability to wound. Assistant Fukuoka police inspector Yoshinori Okada, 46, is suspected of violating the Firearms and Swords control law after an illegal model gun was found at his home on April 15.

According to police, Okada had uploaded photos of the gun onto his blog, and when authorities confiscated the item, they discovered it had been altered to shoot metal bullets. Okada was quoted as saying that he didn't know the weapon was illegal. Police are currently investigating other model firearms he has stored at his home.

Okada was quoted as saying that he didn’t know the weapon was illegal.

It figures.....Keystones don't even know when they have something illegal. LOL!

Besides the fact he says he didn't know it was illegal LOL, one has to ask, what was his purpose in having the gun?

Ambiguous title title there. Having an altered model gun? Having altered a model gun? Two different things!

Having one under Japanese law is bad enough, but if they can prove that he altered it himself he will be in deep doodoo.

So the police officer doesn't know what is legal and what is not?

The laws are so strict here when everything slams in, and they hinge on a pin, so it's safer to say that you didn't know. Each police district has a very slightly different interpretation of the laws, and lawyers may be able to help him this way. This may be the only way out for him, the difference between all or nothing, possibly even from his point of view, life or death... his reputation is ruined already.

This is something that should have been handled in house. Where is the leadership these days?

I think this is all about him posting online. If he was incautious enough to identify himself as a cop or give his real name then he might have shot himself in the foot (figuratively) and removed any possibility of this being dealt with internally.

This is all across Canada the rules & regulations are extremely stiff. For instance if my home was inspected, for some reason or another, & they spotted a magazine for a semi-auto h/gun that can hold more then 10 rounds then I am about to be tossed into jail with possibility of 4 yrs in jail plus all my f/arms, reloading gear, primers, powder bullet tips, brass, to reloading presses to everything else related to guns which also includes some costly gun books I have purchases----are also to be confinscated.

So if this police officer does not know this then hey is STUPID to say the least. After all no one, other then some trained police officers along with military can have a gun that will fire bullets.

Japanese airsoft can be modded into real guns without much trouble.

Took the liberty of editing it.

With regards to the statement, based on my knowledge of airsoft guns and limited theoretical knowledge of firearms, I must say it's false. Airsoft guns are made of either plastic or light metals like brass and aluminum which cannot withstand the forces acting inside a real gun by themselves. If you can actually make it shoot a bullet without blowing up on your face - which requires heavy modification to begin with, it will not be able to fire another round because there isn't any system in place that is remotely similar to the reloading system in semi-automatic firearms. Not to mention the compromised structural integrity. Reminds me of the Cassiopeia issue recently. If you said "airsoft guns can be modded to fire a bullet" I may be inclined to agree.

Back on topic, even airsoft guns operating on the legal limit CAN wound. It may not penetrate your skin but it can draw blood. So the statement in the article is ambiguous at best with regards to the application of the law.

But the worst is a law enforcer not knowing what the law is.

There are BB versions of M16s that you can buy and have the majority of the same components as the real thing. Just a few alerations and you have an assault rifle.

They need tougher corporate laws to prevent the sale of models which can be customised. Simple.

On another note - my folks tried to bring me a 'Spud Gun', which fires bits of potato, for my birthday. They nearly got locked up upon arrival... wonder what would have happened if they had tried to enter with one of these BB guns sold over here...?

Model gun? It looks real enough to me!

A BB gun is real gun. It really does shoot projectiles. And air guns can be made lethal. Napoleon's army made good use of air guns. Many of you don't seem to realize these. What makes a gun illegal or not are very peculiar details. It is quite possible the cop did not realize he made the gun illegal through whatever alterations he made. It can be a fine line between legal and not. Or, he might be lying. Either way, he is not stupid.

If I made lead pellets and muzzle load and shoot them from my air gun to kill birds, is it illegal or no? I doubt any of you have a quick answer to that. Few of these model gun related questions are easy. And while muzzle velocity is easy to understand, how many of you have a device to measure it?
