People shouldn't be so critical of this cop. Working in juvenile justice as I do, I can tell you that teenagers (boys & girls) are capable of some incredibly vicious acts. The kid was lucky the cop had restraint enough to fire warning shots. In many instances, especially here in the US, we'd be talking about a dead kid.
I agree, hellokitty's post seems to be the most realistic about everything. The kids just have no fear because they know nothing will happen to them in the end. But the kid was afraid of something in order to attack the cop. Otherwise, he should have just put up his hands and said "Can I help you?"
The officer was 58. Read again, and don't presume. I'll admit some members of the Japanese police might not be the persona of fitness, but consider this. The 58 year old chases the 14 year old... and catches him! That is a feat in itself. Huffing and wheezing while trying to talk on the radio, the 14 year old belts the officer in the face because he wasn't cuffed, (mistake) stunning the police officer, then tries to grab the gun in a scuffle which causes more injuries to both. It ends when the cop fires warning shots at the kid (instead of shooting him) after preventing his gun from being taken.
Now, it's true this piece could have been written better, and included more information, but some of you that come on here and post comments on a consistent basis really need to consider why your posts are usually negative.
He deserved to get his AZZ whooped -- How are you going to be a cop and get beat down by a 14 year old. He needs his badge taken away or either summoned to an AKIDO Sleep-In SUMMER CAMP. And then he is going to blast his weapon in some water - how did the kid even get close enough to TOUCH his weapon.---He is looser!!! With a capital OOSER!
VA2Tokyo, it's spelled "loser" not "looser", meaning "more loose."
Anyway, like others have said, be happy that adult cops in Japan show restraint in not beating or shooting at kids. Or at least look at unfit or un-battle tested cops as an indicator of a less violent society. Despite your image of LA cops, they are taught to show restraint against shooting at young teens precisely because of the public outcry that will ensue when a cop kills a kid. And teen gang members in Los Angeles pack guns. Plus young teen gang members are often given shooting assignments precisely because they won't receive as harsh a sentence if they're caught.
VA2Tokyo - um, yeah "looser" do you mean the cop is....well I don't what you mean, actually. At any rate, unlike the US, not many cops in Japan are 6 feet tall, well trained and are constantly on their guard to fights every person they see walking on the street. Cops in Japan, unlike other countries, don't have to worry about people, even criminals, attacking them. Hence the historic criticism on Gaijin Crime - be it well founded or not. But, hey VA2Tokyo, if you really think this is bad - why don't you go home? You'll be happier and feel safer. I know I feel safer when I hear gun shots - I know the cops are using their weapons (although I guess it could be the criminals...but no worries, cops in the US are well armed and trained, they'll catch the bad guy as they always do... they do, right?).

The reference to the 'arsenal' was in reply to rtrhead1's suggestion that 'real' police should use their guns more. Like you, I'm glad to live in a country where guns are neither legal nor prevalent (though I put it down to good sense more than God), and I would not like to see the police here shooting the place up at every minor misdemeanor.

no, not use their guns more, just LEARN TO DO THE JOB THEY ARE PAID TO DO! and if that means you have to shoot someone who is a direct threat to you, then so be it. again, you would still have them kill the cop then the cop to use a gun.
and about the "poor brazilian electrician", he was acting suspicious, and was carrying a backpack running into a train station. lemme see, "terrorists" wear backpacks into crowded areas often with backpacks or vests on, and generally speaking, kill more than one person. would you rather they didn't shoot him and take the chance of finding out the hard way that he actually was a criminal and they find out when 50 people or so are picked up a piece at a time? of course you would. why? because 1 innocent life had the chance to be taken. you like to close your eyes to the problems of the world and pretend that by staying in the "safety" of japan, none of it will ever touch you. damn I hate hippies.

I've spoken to a Japanese cop about handling teens. He sayid that the teens know nothing can happen to them. That's why they are so bold.

There has to be a lot more to the story than this... is it possible he considered the 14yr old some sort of a friend?

Read again, the officer who was attacked was 26. His partner, who left is wingman alone and apparently didn't catch anybody, was 58.
