Excuse me? The guy gets fired and all is forgotten? He needs to get fined and goto jail.

  • bamboohat at 09:40 AM JST - 16th September

the prefectural police have now ordered all their employees suspected of having an alcohol dependency to see doctors or face dismissal

see a doctor is all, eh? A doctor who likely boozes just as much, and won't do anything other than say "don't booze so much." so all the idiots can check off their boxes and pretend they've done something to deal with the problem.

    ,

Statistically policing is the MOST stressful job. J POLICE DEPT have no clue about STRESS MANAGEMENT Alcohol becomes the acceptable way to de-stress. The PROBLEM lies as much with how the Police Dept function here . . and the ABSOLUTE LACK of SUPPORT cops haveto address
    addictions or job related problems

gogog - the guy is indicted - that is he'll face justice...

  • gogogo at 11:49 AM JST - 16th September

ebisen: Doesn't mean anything will happen, the judge will say he is a role model, he is "truly" sorry for what he did and that he says he has learnt his lesson and will get let off.

yes but this is a completely different discussion already. I think he'll face justice and get 1-5 years (probably with probation) and never be a cop again. I also think the Police did a lot to avoid this kind of cases but, because we're dealing with humans here they keep popping...

Maybe among civvy street occupations. Overall, I would say that bomb disposal officers have a somewhat more stressful profession.

Stress? From friggin what? All most of them do is sit in the Koban all day.

  • sillygirl at 05:04 PM JST - 16th September

don`t forget to mention that while sitting in the koban they have their heads down reading - reports??? - i think not. probably this weeks issue of the perv magazines.

  • gogogo at 06:57 PM JST - 16th September

ebisen: I seriously doubt they will convict a police officer, they will sweep it under the carpet and they don't want the police force to look bad. I hope they do convict him and send him to jail. We'll never hear about it as it will be swept under the run.

Please follow this story JT to find the outcome :)

Glad to hear he was indicted and fired. Also good that they are taking some measures to help prevent cops from drunk driving...although I wonder what they mean by 'see a doctor'. Someone who is an alcoholic needs psychological help, group therapy or AA meetings. A regular doctor who just says 'you must quit drinking' is not going to help.

In addition, I think that counsellors should be available to all police officers because they surely have to deal with a lot of stress in their line of work.

@gogogo - Unless you are a certified psychic with billions in your bank account from all the lotteries that you've won, I don't see how you can get away with a statement like "Excuse me? The guy gets fired and all is forgotten?" I would think you'd need to AT LEAST wait until AFTER the trial before you unleash that outburst.

In light of the incident, the prefectural police have now ordered all their employees suspected of having an alcohol dependency to see doctors or face dismissal.

If this was true one could expect to see half a dozen stories like this every day. - There will be a bit of a crackdown. A couple of cops 'might' singled out for rehab, a couple of short-term suspensions and pay cuts or possibly even one or two will get fired, but within three months it will all be forgotten and we can all go back to enjoying reading about the J-cops leaving the scenes of accidents, failing to stop at random breath testing areas and stealing girl's underwear from clotheslines. Pure joy!

    • Give the cops a break people! They are the best source of entertainment in Japan.

Fadamor: You obviously don't live in Japan.
