The National Police Agency says that during the three-month period between April and June this year, the amount of financial damages incurred by online banking fraud has spiked to record highs.

The NPA said financial losses for personal banking amounted to more than 400 million yen, while business and corporate related accounts sustained losses of close to 200 million. This is the largest spike in Internet banking fraud loss ever.

The Japanese Bankers Association conducted a massive investigation of 192 regional and national branches across the country, NHK reported, which revealed that from April to June, there were 413 online banking fraud cases reported, and a total loss of 449 million yen.

Compared to the same period in 2013, the overall number of cases increased threefold while financial losses increased four times, the NPA said.

What is the exact definition of 'online banking fraud'?

If someone steals your password and transfers money from your account, I call that online banking fraud. If you get an email from a nigerian prince or someone selling viagra, and you transfer the money yourself, I call that plain old stupidity.

Get use to it; here in the USA bank fraud is wild; junkies printing fake credit cards in the parking lots of banks for ATM use. Just hang'em high as a warning to others!

Does that fraud include the BOJ producing "currency" out of thin air, writing checks backed only by the promise to repay through further theft?

Wait for the "We believe that anti-social forces (ie. Yakuza) are largely to blame here, which is extremely regrettable (ie. we'll do nothing about it)".
