Trainee cop arrested for taking up-skirt photos at station
TOKYO —
A 23-year-old man arrested in September for taking a photo up a woman’s skirt in Bubaigawara Station, Fuchu, was a trainee police officer, it has been revealed.
According to police, the man—a trainee at a police academy—was caught taking the photo with his cell phone on Sept 19, Sankei Shimbun reported. A spokesperson said he was apprehended by station staff before being handed over to police.
The man reportedly confessed to the crime and was fined. Police said the man resigned from his post on the same day.
During questioning, he was quoted by police as saying that taking up-skirt photos is fun and that he couldn’t help himself, Sankei reported

Obviously his mentor is a substandard cop. He should have coached the rookie by saying that taking photo's was strictly for forensic science only - and that he enjoys studying the science of law enforcement.

What is it with cops and this type of crime! The way it's going, meeting a cop here on a dark street at night is going to make me feel uneasy rather than assured! Wonder if it's something they put in the kettle at the local Kobans!!!!! Having said that, I have...touch wood....had nothing but good experiences with the police here so far!

Forgive what may be a dumb question, but why is this a crime? Aren't people free to take pics of whatever they like, as long as they don't touch the girls or lift up their skirts? If a woman sitting across from me on a train has her legs slightly spread apart, would it be a crime if I took a picture? (Don't get me wrong, I'm not into this sort of thing . . . just wondering what the law/crime is.)

Fadamor -- why don't you answer your own question? Maybe it is because it took the authorities over two months to admit/divulge that he was a police trainee, even though he resigned that same day. Wasn't that newsworthy then, too? Then how come it wasn't stated then? Also, doesn't "the man" have a name?
